Dr. Brackett stared out of the window into the black night illuminated with the neon glow of signs and brief flashes of headlights. Ambulances came and went ignorant of the watchful eyes.
His mind wasn't focused on the lights or sounds of the busy city. Looking down Dr. Brackett stared at a picture the he had swiped from a locked drawer in his desk. Nobody had seem him sneak into his office earlier.
The picture was of a tiny baby girl with wide sapphire eyes and wavy black hair the just reached her ears. Two young boys, not over seven, stood on either side watching in wonder. One more person was in the picture. A person who was a stranger to Kelly now. It was him gazing at the baby with more love than anyone ever knew.
Looking at this made Kelly's heart ache. It reminded him of how sweet their days were together and yet how terrifying it had been to give up his little girl. All for her safety.
Dr. Brackett laughed in disgust. Safety. Boy I'm sure doin a great job of taking care of Genevieve.
Genevieve had found out that he was her father and forgiven him just weeks before this accident for giving her up. Though she didn't think it was anything to forgive and that it wasn't his fault. Now what would she say? Did she know that it was him in the other car?
The door opened and Dixie came up to his bed with her hands in her pockets. Dr. Brackett quickly hid the picture under the covers. He wasn't ashamed about his past life but he didn't know if Genevieve felt comfortable with telling people yet.
Dixie looked into his eyes trying to read his thoughts which she normally did quite well. "What's wrong?" "Well I'm stuck in a hospital isn't that enough" he snapped. The head nurse stared unfazed by his harsh tone.
Dixie had been around Kell long enough to know what to expect and to know when something just wasn't right. "I mean what's really wrong" the doctor looked away "Is it Genevieve?" He slowly looked back at her "How is she? You never told what was wrong with her"
Dixie ignored the last part and answered his first question. "She's doing fine" "How fine?" "Just... fine" she replied with a shrug. "Com'mon Dix. You and I both know I'll find out sooner or later"
Dixie's act slowly slipped away and she grabbed Kelly's hand to keep her's from trembling. "Kel... she's bli..." her voice broke and her words faded. She loved and looked out for Genevieve like a mother. Tears rolled down her cheek as she continued "She's blind"
Dr. Brackett wasn't sure how to react. He wasn't sure if he'd heard. No... she's come so far in this life. She's just come back to me! Dixie was sobbing now as she held her hands to her face. Kelly held her as close as he could. It was all the doctor could do. He just felt so helpless.
