It can be awkward depending on the situation. I was gaming earlier and we voice chatted and it was a bit awkward since we haven't played much together and the conversations was not something I was used to as before.
Then again conversations come and go.. some are enjoyable some are annoying and some are just nonsense.. do conversation environment change when you get to know someone more or depending on the situation? Do they impact one's lives? I wonder why I bother talking when sometimes it's just bothersome.
