"Alright, settle down class, your next enthralling Astronomy lesson is about to begin!" You announce contently. Nothing made you happier than seeing the new enthusiastic faces of the first years, a lot of whom were always eager to learn about astronomy. Maybe this is because Astronomy is the only lesson to sometimes occur at night. Yet, there are normally a myriad of students who are fascinated by the stars, intrigued by the moon's surface and perplexed by phenomena such as auroras.
The students' passion to learn is definitely something that fuels your lessons. Without interest, it becomes increasingly difficult for the first years to keep their focus, especially because of how late at night the lessons sometimes are. When their adrenaline kicks in, it could feel like they are having a sleepover with their classmates. Thus, you always bear in mind that night-time lessons should both inform and entertain, especially if you want to gain or keep their interest in the subject.
"Before we start to learn about the movements of the planets, who here can tell me the name of the constellation that we learnt about last week? Yes, Penny."
"Orion, miss."
"Very good. And, who can remember the name of the brightest star in Orion? Can you, Thomas?"
"Rigel?" He says with uncertainty.
"Yes, well remembered! And Sapphire, can you recall what the second brightest star is called?"
"Betelgeuse, it shares a similar name to that film with the guy in a stripy suit!"
"That is an interesting way to remember it, I didn't think any of you were old enough to have watched Beetlejuice yet. Nonetheless, if any of you have seen it, Sapphire may have given you a trick for remembering it! Just be aware that they are both spelt differently. Well done Sapphire."
After quizzing more of your students about Orion, you finish the recap of last week's lesson and begin to hand out scrolls depicting the planetary movements. It is only when you go to collect the scrolls from their bag that you spot Severus, standing on the stairwell, watching you teach intently. You raise an eyebrow to question why he is here and, in return, gain a simple shake of the head, implying that he does not need anything. Confused by his presence, you continue your lesson with the intention of talking to Severus later. However, when the time comes, when all of the students are returning to their dormitories, Severus is no longer there.
Next Wednesday night, to your surprise, Severus appears again, observing you teach the hyperactive first years. Since you never received an explanation for why he was watching you last week, you decide to turn the tables and cast a spotlight on him.
"For tonight's lesson, you will be working in pairs." You remark smugly, as you secretly plan how to rope in the curious professor. "I will be needing a volunteer to aid me in this demonstration. So, while you all decide who to pair up with, I will discuss what is required to Professor Snape, who has kindly volunteered to assist me in this example."
When you announce Severus' name to the first years, their eyes instantly widen. Nervous looks are passed around the classroom, which causes you to chuckle slightly. Nonetheless, you manage to suppress your laughter into a faint smile as you walk over to Severus and say so only he can hear: "You appear to have enjoyed my last lesson so much that you have returned again. If you are struggling to sleep then maybe this task will succeed in taking your mind off things."
Once Severus and yourself have demonstrated today's task, you then go over to each pair, making sure they understand the work. During this however, you find a few of the students sniggering, occasionally sneaking a glance in your direction. Concerned by their lack of progress, you question what they are up to, leading one boy to pipe up with an immature response about your enthusiasm for Astronomy. Quickly, you manage to think of a witty response that makes the small group laugh, not at you, but at the boy's remark, before starting their work in a productive manner. Although you are satisfied with the outcome, the other professor in the tower is not.
