"I just can't believe that it wasn't real." Carl muttered, breaking the thought filled silence that constantly sat between us.
I looked over at Carl, tearing myself from what I was thinking about. His blue eyes were filled with a sense of sadness and depression, probably over our recent loss at Terminus, watching the smoke dance up from the small campfire. His jaw, tightened and glistening with a natural amount of perspiration, clenched and unclenched in thought as his icy stare locked with mine.
"Terminus?" I asked stupidly. Carl nodded and chuckled humorously.
"Everything seems like it's destroyed. I'm scared we'll never find a place we can just settle down at." I added quietly, pulling my legs to my chest as a sharp wind blew.
"The prison was like that. It was really safe." He shifted to look over at me, smiling at the lightest. His eyes gleamed with a light airy feel that allowed me to loosen up a bit within. "You would have thought it was cool."
"So it was a legit prison? Like with bars and cells and all of that stuff?"
"Yeah, that's the kind of stuff you find in prisons." I nudged his shoulders, giggling at the sarcasm that oozed from the response. "My room was a cell. It was pretty cozy considering..." He chuckled sarcastically.
"That's kind of ironic don't you think?" I grinned. "Prisons used to keep people in and you guys were using it to keep people out... or at least, what once were people."
Carl watched me, eyes folded with thoughts and obvious memories from the prison, a place with family and hope he lost with a filthy battle and unforgiving enemy. A sense of darkness swam over his features, a casting shadow seeming to cross his face, but he shook it off and smiled fragilely. "Yeah, I thought that too when we first found it."
I tried to play off the tinge of regret that wrapped its clinging arms around the thoughts that floated through the air with an airy response. "It sounds like it was a great place." I suggested, knowing what I was saying was true. "I mean, people tried to steal it. I wish I had ran into you guys when you still lived in it."
Carl sighed, nodding as he watched Judith who played in Rick's lap on the other side of the fire. "Yeah. I do too. It really was a safe place before it got attacked. I wish we could have stayed there." The darkness was there; in his words, his eyes, but it was not as heavy.
I glanced over at my new group, sighing, knowing that these people had probably been through more than me. They had even lost 4 camps or places that you could call home. The entire group sat quietly in a circle, some sharpening weapons, some dozing off, or some looking around just to stay alert. It was somewhat peaceful at the moment. The night sky loomed overhead, stars blinking down onto the dreary earth. Carl and I sat leaning against a tree, both of us a little behind the rest of the group, but close enough to feel the warmth from the fire.
I thought through Rick's words and figured that it was now or never. I needed to tell Carl what I had told Rick. "I'm sorry I haven't been able to tell you about the reason I left... I just..."
