Michael was nervous when he arrived at Beth’s house. She had promised that he would stay at hers rather than Debby’s this time, but that would involve Blake, because she was now there too. I shouldn’t have given into Beth’s pleading, he cursed. I should have just come on the day of the ceremony, instead of four days early. But he was there, so he would have to go in. He had no idea why he was dreading meeting Beth’s girlfriend so much, but he was.
He knocked on the front door, thinking it would be more polite, his heart lurching in his chest. After a minute or two the door creaked open and a new face appeared. She was unusually tall, three inches or so taller than Michael, with long blonde hair, right down past her shoulders. Her face was oval shaped, with brilliant blue eyes, and a perfectly placed beauty spot under her right one.
Michael gulped. ‘Uh.’ He couldn’t find any words, he was stunned into silence by the beautiful young woman in front of him.
She grinned and let out a little snigger. ‘Michael, right?’ she asked. ‘Come in.’ He followed her through the door and into the living room, trying to find something to say.
‘So you’re Blake?’ he managed at last, sitting down on the sofa. ‘Boy, was Debby right about you.’
Blake smiled. ‘What did she tell you this time?’ she said, sitting down on the coffee table in front of him. She pushed her airy hair over her head and sighed. ‘She likes telling everyone about me, you shouldn’t listen to anything she says.’
‘She only told me the truth,’ he said.
‘Which was?’ she asked.
‘That you’re extremely gorgeous,’ he admitted.
‘And you’re a flatterer apparently,’ she laughed. ‘Beth’s childhood best friend, the love of Debby’s life, how have I only just met you?’
Michael shook his head in amazement. ‘I don’t even know,’ he told her. ‘I can’t seem to work things out with Beth. I left when I was ten, then we didn’t speak again until I was seventeen, that’s when I came to visit. After that summer, thinking of Debby was just too much, so we never spoke. This time I’m not allowed to lose contact with her.’
‘Yeah, Beth told me about you pretty soon after we met,’ she explained. ‘Even though you guys hadn’t spoken in a year, you were still one of the first things she talked about. That whole thing with Debby was insane apparently.’
He couldn’t help but smile at this. ‘Yep, it was. You’re lucky, you and Beth have it easy, going to the same university makes relationships easy,’ he complained.
‘Well, being the same age makes it easy,’ she added. ‘I mean you were what? Seventeen and Debby was fourteen. How’s that supposed to work?’
‘When I left I was eighteen and she was fifteen,’ he corrected. ‘But you’re right, she was too young for what we had. It was not the fourteen-year-old type relationship, but I was hoping we could have tried again now.’
‘Ah yes, the Alfie drama,’ she sighed.
‘Beth told you about that one too then?’ he asked. ‘Boy, you sure do know a lot about my life for someone I know nothing about. I was here for a week before she even told me you existed.’
