Michael woke up to the sunshine streaming through the window on Saturday morning. Even though he’d been to the beach previously with Beth, it had never been properly hot, so this was what felt like the first day of real summer this year.

‘Beach today!’ Blake greeted him, when he joined them in the picturesque garden for breakfast. ‘It’s gonna be amazing.’

‘Debby coming?’ he asked, pulling in his chair and scanning his eyes over the huge spread of food on the round table in front of him.

‘Dunno,’ Beth told him. ‘I’ll call, she might want to.’ She had her phone out and had dialled Debby’s number before she’d finished her sentence. She pressed it to her ear and waited. ‘Do you want to come to the beach with us today?’ she asked after a pause.

Michael glanced at Blake and she smiled and winked at him. ‘Me, Blake and Michael,’ Beth said to the phone. ‘Okay, we’ll come over in a bit.’

She hung up and dropped her phone on the table. ‘That’s a yes then?’ Blake asked.

‘Yep, we just need to give her enough time to have a shower,’ she said. ‘Bet she just wants to make herself look good for this one.’ She waved her hand towards Michael.

‘Yeah right,’ he scoffed, helping himself to food. ‘You forget, I’m the one that likes her, not the other way around. She’s clearly not interested.’

‘Oh, she likes you,’ Blake contradicted. ‘She’s just scared to admit it. Anyone can see it.’

‘Everyone says that, but I’m no closer to her than I was more than two weeks ago,’ he pointed out. ‘I just don’t know when to call it quits.’

‘Never,’ Beth told him forcefully, pouring some more orange juice into a glass in front of her. ‘You cannot give up on Debby. Not if you really love her.’

Michael shook his head and sighed. ‘We’ll have to wait and see.’

Half an hour later they left Beth’s house, swimming costumes underneath their summery clothes, each with a towel in their arms. They made their way across St. David’s to Debby’s house, where she was sitting on the wall of her front garden, waiting for them.

‘You guys took long enough,’ she commented, sliding down off with a little jump. ‘Hi, Blake.’ She gave Blake a hug and Michael couldn’t help laughing- the top of her head hardly reached Blake’s chin.

‘What?’ she asked, turning around and giving him a glare.

‘Oh, it’s just you looked quite short in comparison to Blake,’ he explained.

‘Ha-ha, very funny,’ she said, walking ahead of them. ‘I’m short. Never heard that one before.’

They walked out of St. David’s, into the surrounding fields. The path they followed ran along the side of the fences and was well worn. When they reached the coastal path, and the dramatic Welsh cliffs dropped away in front of them, the wind kicked up. They could hear the water crashing on the rocks down below, but all they could see to the horizon was the impenetrable blue blanket of sea. It was another ten-minute walk along this path to their favourite beach.
