Five
Promise sat up against the headboard of her bed with her gaze fixed on the flat screen across from her. She softly caressed her son' back as he lay across her lap, having drifted off into a light slumber. She flipped through the various channels, hoping to find something that would grasp her attention. It would be many nights spent like this one since she was going into full time mom mode again.
A knock at her door sounded, instantly breaking the modest amount of focus she attempted to have on the TV. "Come in."She answered quietly, being cautious of a sleeping Zayvion. The door creaked open slowly, revealing her mother. Promise sighed under her breath, because she already knew what was to come of her mother'ssudden visit to her room. She was about to start wondering why she'd offered her spare bedroom to her parents.
Cierra Taylor sauntered into the room with a clearing of her throat. It was evident that she was trying to capture her daughter's attention, who's blue orbs seemed to be still fixated on the TV. "Yes mom,"Inwardly rolling her eyes, she took it upon herself to put her mother out of her misery. She sat down before allowing her bright hazel eyes to come into contact with Promise's side profile.
"I said we would talk about my grandson's father, and it is later Promise."She finally conjectured while folding her arms across her chest. Promise sighed aloud as she tossed the remote control down. Her options were limited, hear her mother out or be forced to sit there while she stared angrily into the side of her face."I meant in a couple of days mother."
Cierra began to shake her head in disgust, "You are something else little girl. This isn't something you can brush off and face whenever. That child needs to know who his dad is, and frankly so do your father and I."Promise could already feel herself becoming annoyed with the presence of her mother. She was always badgering her about something, and that's where their personalities often clashed. She always meant well, but her way of going about things often overshadowed that.
"And he will know him in due time mom. This isn't something that I plan on keeping away from that man any longer."Promise carefully lifted Zayvion and laid him on the bed beside her. She then placed her legs up to her chest while diverting her gaze towards the open window adjacent them. She would rather look out into the clear night sky than take on her mother's piercing stare.
"So you do know who he is then?"
"I've known for awhile now actually. Zayvion's name is similar to his."
She watched her mother out of her peripheral view. Promise could see the disappointment seep into her face – the fairness of her skin complexion giving it away. Heat seemed to be radiating off her as the temperature in the room rose.
Promise pressed her face into her knees, a sudden urge to hide consuming her. She could partially understand her mother's anger towards her. Yes, she'd kept this from Zayne for two years. Yes, she knew it was wrong. She damn sure knew that she couldn't keep going on like this, because her son was getting older and he desperately needed that male figure in his life. Why couldn't she see that she was dealing with this the best way that she knew how?
She had a constant reminder everyday, her son's face, the face that resembled Zayne's wholeheartedly.
Cierra grabbed Promise's leg and pulled it away from her, ridding her of her safe haven. It made her feel like her daughter was running away from the situation. Her head suddenly shot up, her blue eyes colliding with her mother's angry hazel ones."What are you waiting for then Promise?!"Her mother yelled, scaring the baby out of his sleep. He quickly shot up with a frown.
