Beta

First day back to school and every nerve ending in my body was screaming in stress and pain. I had not imagined it would be this bad. It was like some insidious worm was crawling through my veins. I had seen Rya get off the bus and start toward the school. Even in the Indian summer heat, she was wearing one of those hoodies I had grown to know so well. She looked so defeated, so broken, she glanced up once and her silvery blue eyes were... were just empty. My wolf and I had confidently started toward her, when it began, the burn of the alpha command, it quickly sparked into an inferno.

By lunchtime, molten lava flowed through my veins and bones. My whole body shook. My breath was short, gasping pants when I watched her eat lunch under her tree. My wolf and I fought an internal battle against the command, holding our own until our second to last class. Assigned seating put Rya directly in front of my work station, Tina's mate's brother was our teacher. As Mr Riley began to talked about the importance of password protection and internet safety, my nose betrayed me with its first drop of crimson. Tim pressed his bandanna to my face. I heard nothing over the howls of my wolf as we thrashed against the pain.

17 minutes till the bell....

16 minutes...

I could do it, I could make through class without causing a scene.

I heard a distance ringing like the morning bells of the churches in Versailles. David, Mr Riley, was holding my face, talking to me, I couldn't hear what he was saying. Tim was shaking my arm, I blinked at him. My wolf was unconscious in my head. I was clinging to her limp body, my tears and blood soaking her fur, and in the classroom, my shirt. The last thing I saw was Daniel holding a sobbing, horrified Tina. Then blackness pulled me under.

Beep.... beep... beep... Goddess dammit! Why can't I reach my alarm clock?

My arm flailed seeking my bedside table and that annoying little cube of torture. A rough hand caught my arm and squeezed it painfully. I jerked away, groaning. It grabbed my jaw, painfully turning my head. Through the slits of my eyes, I saw him. The Beta. Even weakened, my wolf flattened her ears and let out a low growl. HE just smirked.

"I'm impressed, pup," he sneered. "Didn't think you'd make it the day, let alone an entire hour sitting behind her in a class. Was it..." he paused with an evil gleam in his eye, "uncomfortable?"

My fists balled in the sheets, I wanted to leap out of that bed and attack him. At that moment, I did not care if we died. But my traitorous body refused to more than twitch and throb.

He sat back, down-eyeing me."Your father and the Alphas underestimate you. But I don't. I know what you really are, and it isn't a Gamma. BE aware, your little school girl act does not fool me. I always know my enemies. You will find a way to break through the Alpha's Command, I have no doubt. I suspect you already have to some extent. SO here is my proposition, you will stay away from Kennedy and Rya unless required by pack functions. You will not antagonize my daughter, she will be Luna. We will find her mate and she will have a pup for Clayton to raise. And then my grandchild shall be Alpha. We have waited three generations for this and you will not interfere. Or else..." He said it all so calmly, he reminded me of one of those movie villains that the hero barely manages to kill in the end.
