With shaking hands, you grasp the steering wheel of your car. Your white knuckles are extremely noticeable, vibrant against the dark leather you have in a death grip. The trees and cars around you are zipping by, but are slowing down as you press into the break pedal. Your breaths, on the other hand, are doing the exact opposite. With each intake, you can feel your heartbeat speeding up. It's fair to say that you're nervous.
You have a right to be. Today is your first day at work. Destination? The esteemed headquarters of the BAU at Quantico.
Yeah, you're nervous. No, you're not going to let that get in the way of your goals.
As your car turns into the parking lot of the building that is soon to become your workplace, you remind yourself that they're just people, your soon-to-be colleagues. Nothing more, nothing less. You've studied people. You understand them. Either way, there's a particular person you have in your mind as you step out of your car and on to the asphalt, the thought of whom only makes you more nervous. You put him out of your mind for the moment, though, taking a few deep breaths. Thinking of him won't help you right now.
Once you're in the building, you take a few careful steps toward the elevators. You know where you're headed, but that still doesn't stop you from taking your informational paper out of your bag a few times to double- and triple- check.
In the deserted elevator, you lean against the cool metal wall. You've made it this far.
"You can do it, Y/N," you murmur. Or maybe you just think it. At any rate, it doesn't take long to reach the correct floor, and you correct your posture quickly before the doors open. Shoulders back, head held high, arms relaxed at your sides; you're ready.
Your shoes click against the tiled floor, adding to the buzz that surrounds the area- the bullpen, you've heard- and you head toward the glass doors. You're about three feet from them when you see Aaron Hotchner, Unit Chief and the man you had met with about the position. He moves forward and opens the door for you, greeting you with a simple, "Agent Y/L/N."
"Agent Hotchner," you give in return, keeping your voice as even as you can. You nod to him as you enter the room slowly, taking it all in.
"Please, call me Hotch. Would you like to meet the rest of the team?" He asks, leading you forward and to the empty desk that you presume to be yours. You place your bag down on the chair, looking around you again. There are people everywhere, but not at the desks surrounding you. You give Hotch a questioning look.
"They're already in the briefing room- we've got a case. You can stay behind on this one, if you'd like, but-" He says, motioning to the other room.
"No, I'll come. No better way to learn the ropes than through experience." You say, and with that, you follow him up the stairs and towards the door, behind which lies the rest of your team. Taking another controlled breath, you follow him in.
The darkened room is fitted with a table and a monitor, mounted to the wall. Around the table sit five people, and another- a flamboyantly dressed woman- stands by the monitor, a remote in hand. You allow your gaze to make its way around the others, noticing an esteemed older man, an attractive African American man (who gives you a wink), a pretty, dark-haired woman, an even prettier blonde woman, and finally....
Spencer.
Your eyes fall on him just seconds after his did you, and you can see the joyful surprise written across his face. His brown eyes are wide, full pink lips curling in the beginnings of a smile, he's sat up straight. You grin at him, hearing Hotch talking in the background.
"And as a new addition to our team, we will be joined by Special Agent-"
"Y/N Y/L/N," Spencer says softly, though he is still audible to the room. As he speaks, he pushes back his chair and stands, moving forward to stand in front of you.
"Surprise," you say, and that's all it takes for him to let out a bark of laughter and pull you into a warm hug. You can hear the hush that has fallen over the room, broken and you break apart.
"You know her, Pretty Boy?" The African American man who winked at you asks.
"Yeah, we were friends in college, and we'd kept in contact since..." He trails off, looking at you, awe still written on his features. "You didn't tell me you were joining the FBI, let alone the BAU!"
"Once again, surprise." You say, grinning from ear to ear.
A throat is cleared from behind you, and you turn to see Hotch giving you a small smile. "Not to interrupt a reunion, but you might want to meet the rest of the team."
Introductions fly around the room, and laughter follows. You already love it there, and a strong feeling of belonging pervades your mind. You have found a home already, among these like-minded, kind people, not to mention being reunited with Spencer. This face-to-face meeting was so much better than the phone calls and letters you had shared, no matter how much you had looked forward to them. You would see him every day from then on.
This, as they said, was the start of something beautiful.
