"Mama...? I-is that you...?" Alexis O'Connor, at only nine years old, sat on the cold, hard, concrete floor of her very own cellar, whimpering in pain and clutching her belly. "N-no...no, I've failed...! I couldn't do it...! M-Mom!!!" She cried out, seeing the corpse that was the failed attempt to transmute her late mother, who was murdered during the Ishvalan war. Tears streamed down her face as she got up and ran out of the basement, locking it behind her.

She ran outside into the streets, but didn't make it more than a few buildings down the street before collapsing from the intense pain in her gut. A soldier by the name of Roy Mustang happened to be walking by at the time she collapsed and managed to get her to a hospital to get her checked out. "Sir, the girl you brought in--" "Will she be okay?" Roy interrupted. The doctor said, "Yes, Sir, she'll live! There's no need to worry about that! You see, the problem is that she's missing her entire reproductive system. It's almost as though they were ripped out, but there's no sign of any surgery at all." Roy's eyes widened a bit and he said, "She performed Human Transmutation...!" The doctor gasped. "A-and how do you know that for sure, Sir?" Roy sighed and said, "We just had another case in the small town of Resenbool. Two boys by the name of Edward and Alphonse Elric attempted to resurrect their dead mother. Edward lost his right arm and his left leg, while Alphonse, whose soul is now bound to a suit of armor, lost his entire body." The doctor sighed, "I see." The doctor looked at Alexis, who was laying in the hospital bed, staring out the window, crying.

"She'll be okay, Sir. Just unable to have children. Heh, hey, on the bright side, though, she won't have a problem with menstruation." Roy pinched the bridge of his nose, clearly uncomfortable with the doctor's statement and said, "Yeah. Can I talk to her?" The doctor said, looking at her through the window again, "Sure, just try not to upset her or get her too worked up." Roy nodded and opened the door.

She looked at Roy briefly, then turned back to looking outside.

She had performed the taboo of Alchemy. She had attempted Human Transmutation. She felt guilty. Now, this soldier would scold her and possibly arrest her if he found out.

"Hello. My name is Roy Mustang. What is your name, young lady?" Roy said calmly. She said quietly, "M-my name...my name is Alexis...A-Alexis O'Connor...." She never once looked at Roy, but he continued to speak to her, "Alexis, huh? Well, Alexis, do you know what is wrong with you?" She didn't look at him, but said quietly, "N-no, Sir...." Roy looked down at his lap and said, "You're missing some very important organs. Your reproductive organs, to be precise. Now you can never have children of your own. All because you attempted Human Transmutation--" "I-I'm sorry, Sir!!" She exclaimed, burying her face into her hands and sobbing, "I-I didn't know it would be this bad!! I-I just...I just wanted to see m-my mom again!! I-I'm so sorry!!" Her voice was muffled, but Roy heard the honest guilt that was in her voice as she cried and apologized. "I-I-I'm sorry! I really am! I'm sorry!" Roy sighed.

"You were strong enough to survive. You were skilled enough to even attempt it," Roy said, thinking of Ed and Al, "Alexis, please consider honing your skills when you return to full health. We could use an Alchemist with your talent in our military forces." Alexis looked up at Roy, her sapphire eyes wide and filled with tears. "W-wait. Y-you're not going to a-arrest me...?" "No. I think you've endured enough punishment." Roy stood up and right before walking out, he said, "Well, Alexis, I must be off. I will be waiting for your application." Alexis called to him, "W-wait, Sir!" He turned around, looking at her, "Yes?" She wrung her hands nervously, "Y-you're...the Flame Alchemist, right...?" He nodded and said, "Yes. So you have heard of me." "C-could you...teach me...?" He gasped, but then said, seeing a small spark of determination in her eyes, "Fine."

Seven years later, now sixteen years old, Alexis O'Connor is known as the Pyre Alchemist, trained by Roy Mustang himself. She lived with him, Lieutenant Riza Hawkeye, and Riza's dog, Black Hayate.

Alexis was sitting on her bed, looking at the cieling, when Riza said outside her door, "Alexis, dinner's ready." Alexis sighed a little and said, trying to remain cheery, "Coming, Riza!" Getting up and looking out the window, she noticed that not only was it already dark outside, but the moon was full.

Downstairs, Riza said to Roy, "Hey, have you noticed something odd about Alexis?" Roy said, looking up from the Elrics' report, "Odd? How so?" Riza crossed her arms and said, gazing upstairs, "Well, she seems...depressed lately, spending most of her time in her room, going out alone a lot more, you know...?" Roy sighed, "I'm sure she's just going through a phase. But, if you think something's up, maybe you should try talking to her." Riza sighed and returned to setting the table for dinner. "Maybe...."

Alexis stood at the top of the stairs, listening to their conversation for a moment, then decided to go downstairs for dinner.

The three ate dinner in silence, then Riza made tea for herself and Roy. Alexis just went back upstairs to shower and turn in for the night.

Alexis lay on her bed, looking outside at the full moon, but sat up when she saw someone duck behind a tree in the woods near the house. She sat up and walked over to the window in her camisole and underwear, both black with accents of red lace.

"I know you're out there," she thought, straining her eyes to see who it was. After five minutes, she finally shrugged and decided she just needed sleep, so she climbed back into bed and closed her eyes.
