It was my first time leaving the country by myself. I was all packed and ready to go, all that was left was to head off to the airport. Deep breaths, Cassie. Everything will be fine. This is your summer vacation. I repeat those words in my head and start the car. My friend Beth was supposed to drive me, but she got sick and was unable to come.
I drive for a good hour and a half before I arrive, and by the time I do my stomach is doing backflips. I hate plane rides, especially long ones, for the fear of crashing or getting stranded or who knows what. Before I know it I am standing at the gate, about to board the plane. My feet are moving without me willing them to. As soon as I take my seat, I seriously wish there was someone next to me that I could cling on to their hand. I take one last look out the window before we take off and say to myself, "Goodbye, America."
I arrive at the airport looking even worse than I did before. I fell asleep on the plane even though I told myself to stay awake, and now I look like a mess. My brown hair is all disheveled and I have bags under my eyes. Coffee. I need coffee.
I make my way to a little cafe in the airport and order a mocha and a bagel. I pay with my credit card, knowing that the credit card company will freak out and send me an email asking if I really am in London to make sure someone isn't using my credit card. Turning away from the counter I realize that there is someone behind me, but I am too late. The next thing I know, I have a hot liquid pouring down my chest and someone has fallen to the floor. I look up and see that the man I bumped into was holding a now smashed cup and his phone, and it turns out I am the one on the floor. He looks down at me with wide eyes and says, "Oh my God I am so sorry!"
He throws the cup away and reaches out his hand for me to help pull myself up.
"No no please it was my fault, I wasn't paying attention." I looked down at my wet clothes. "Oh great." Before I can stop him the man is rushing to get napkins and handing some to me and then cleaning up the mess on the floor. "No I can get that," I protest, kneeling down to help him.
"No I insist," he says continuing to mop up the coffee. It is then that I get a good look at him. Long limbs, brownish hair, high cheekbones and eyes that could see right through you. He smiles and my stomach churns, and I almost don't notice his outstretched hand. "Hi, I'm Tom."
