Ruby's POV
I looked up and my blood turned to ice. Mia's mom, dad, and Doctor Lorraine were all standing in my hospital room. Mrs. Kathy's face was blotchy and I could tell she had been crying. Mia's family was my second family and at times I felt like I was closer to Mrs. Kathy than I was with my own mother.
"I am so so sorry." I busted into hysterical tears. "This is all my fault, and I know you will hate me for this. Mrs. Kathy, Mr. Mark... I-I..." I was at a complete and utter loss for words. I felt so guilty. Their only child was dead because of me. I have never hated myself more than I did now. If my body wasn't in so much pain right now, I am sure it would have been numb.
"Ruby... We know you are sorry. Everything happens for a reason. We know that you are having a hard time too. We had them take Mia off of life support..." Mr. Mark said to me. I was trying to hold back my tears but I could feel them spilling down my face. I never called Mia's parent by their last name. When I first met her parents and called them Mr. and Mrs. Peters, they practically yelled at me and asked me to not call them by their surnames.
"Even though we are having a hard time with the loss of our Mia, we know you couldn't have done anything about it." Mrs. Kathy said to me. "It was her time to go, sweetie."
I wheeled myself over to where Mia's Parents were standing and pulled them down for an embrace. I cried into their shoulders and they told me everything was okay, but I knew that because of my mistakes, I ruined a perfectly normal family. I caused them too loose the one thing that they had in their lives.
When they pulled away, I looked up at Mrs. Kathy and her expression was even more uneasy than it was before.
"Your mother is on her way to this hospital. We called her to tell her we were sorry about the situation she was in but, she informed us she was unaware of what was happening..." Mrs. Kathy explained. "I am sorry she had to find out like this, honey." She bent over and gave me a quick hug. She stood back up, straightened out her dress, wiped her nose on a tissue, and walked out of my room, Mr. Mark following right behind her.
I turned to Doctor Lorraine, who gave me a weary smile and patted my shoulder, as she continued out the door. I had completely forgotten Harry was standing behind me in the doorway, until he cleared his throat.
I swiftly turned my wheelchair around to face him, I didn't realize he was so close to me, until I ran over his foot with the wheel of my chair.
"Ow!" he yelled grabbing his foot in his hands and hopping on the other.
"Oh my god, I am so sorry." I muttered out, trying to hold back the laughter building up inside. I think Harry noticed the smile growing on my face. He let go of his foot and started to laugh hysterically.
"I'm such a baby." He said giggling. "I can't even imagine how bad it must have hurt to get hit with a fucking bus." He laughed. "I can't even handle being hit with a wheel chair." We both were in hysteria now. I had tears flowing down my cheeks, this time from laughing, instead of crying. I couldn't help but notice the adorable dimples on Harry's cheeks. They made him even more attractive.
"I really needed this." I said softly to Harry.
"What?" he answered his laughter slowing.
"You..." I said. I could tell my cheeks were turning redder by the second. "...A friend..." I said shyly.
"Well Ruby, If a friend is what will make you happier, I am willing to do that and a million times more. As long as your happy." Harry replied. I was shocked. Nobody had ever said anything like that to me...ever. Harry gave me a sense of security I had never had before.
"Ruby?" Harry whispered quietly.
"Yes?" I responded
Harry leaned down close to my face. "You are really beautiful" he barely spoke. He was so close to me I could feel the heat that was radiating off his body. He leaned in and kissed my cheek.
"Everything is going to be okay." He said quietly before slipping out of my room. "I Promise." I didn't know what my feelings for him were quite yet, but the butterflies in my stomach pretty much answered the question for me.
I then realized that I was stuck in my wheelchair and couldn't get onto the bed myself. After numerous attempts I decided my body was definitely still to weak to walk, and that I still needed help with the simplest tasks. I pushed the call button next to the bed and a few moments later Finn walked into my room.
"Oh hey Ruby." Finn said with little enthusiasm. "What do you need?"
"Can you just help me get into bed?" I asked as politely as I could.
"Yeah. Just grab my arm and try to stand up on the count of three." He grabbed me under my arm. "One... Two... Three." He eased me into a standing position and helped me walk over to my cold bed.
"Thanks Finn" I said, nodding my head.
"No problem. It's kinda my job" He said muttering a small laugh. "Anything else I can get you?" He asked.
"No thank you. I think I am just going to get some rest."
"Okay.. Have a nice nap Ruby." He mumbled while walking out of my room.
I grabbed my shattered phone off the table next to the bed. The car accident had left my poor phone in terrible condition. It was so shattered, it looked like a spider web had taken over my phone. I had ignored the many texts and calls from people who were assumingly unaware of my current position. I opened my voicemail and nearly dropped my phone on the ground next to my bed when I listened to the first message.
"Hello Ruby. Its your father... I- uhh heard about your accident on the news.. I really hope you're okay sweetie. I know I hadn't been the best father to you, and I am really sorry about that. I know you and your mother will probably never forgive me, but I would like to start over with you... I have a new wife now... and I have made a new life for myself. I am a completely different person than I was and I know that..." Three beeps interrupted the sound of my fathers voice, telling me the time limit on his message was reached.
I felt so alone and realized I needed someone to talk to about this. I pushed the call button for the second time within ten minutes.
Soon after Finn came back into my room wearing the same blue scrubs he had on ten minutes ago.
"What do you need..." He said very harshly
"Get Harry." I demanded. Finn followed my orders and walked to down the hallways to go get Harry. I didn't know why I wanted to talk to Harry so bad , but I knew he was my only option at the moment, and I was perfectly okay with this option.
