Chapter 4

JACK'S POV

She had just finished her surgery on her broken leg, and was covered in bandages while a large bruise covered the side of her face.

The doctor told us that she had gotten a severe concussion which could (in the worst-case scenario) cause memory loss.

We had been at the hospital for 13 hours straight, because Finn insisted that we should wait until she woke up, but had fallen asleep himself on the chair beside her.

My stomach rumbled as it had been about 15 hours since I'd last eaten, so I went over to the cafeteria to find a bite to eat.

FINN'S POV

I was swimming in a lake together with Charlie as we were playing around and throwing water on eachother.

"No! stop, Finn!" Charlie laughed as I took hold of her hand to pull her closer.

I held her close against me as she turned around to face me,

"Finn, help-" she whispered as her eyes were filled of fright and something from the bottom of the lake reached up to grab her ankle and dragged her down.

I was still holding on to her hand and was dragged along as I saw her face screaming under water.

Something held me back and Charlie's hand slipped out of mine as I watched her being dragged into the deep.

I woke up seconds later, out of breath and reached for Charlie's hand as I heard someone stepping into the room.

"This is she" the doctor said as he stood by the door and showed someone in.

"Oh! My baby!" a woman said as she ran over to Charlie and took hold of her hand.

I saw tears streaming down her face as she sat down beside Charlie and stroked her cheek.

"Oh!" she exclaimed as put her hand on her chest in chock as she noticed me on the other side of the bed.

"Who are you?" she asked and narrowed her red and puffy eyes.

"Finn Harries." I said and reached my hand out, but she just looked at it and turned to Charlie again without saying anything.

"Why are you here?" she said quietly as she continued stroking Charlie's hand.

"I was with her as the accident happened." The woman tensed and looked at me again.

"Charlie was actually staying with us-"

"Charlie? Who is Charlie?" she cut me off.

"Her name is not Charlie?" I questioned.

"No, Charlotte." she said and smiled to Charlie who looked so peaceful as she was laying unconscious in her bed.

"She's hated that name ever since could say it herself.." she stroked Charlie's cheek again and looked over at me as a tear streamed down her face, but she quickly wiped it away with her hand.

"You were saying?" She muttered and snuffed her nose.

"Well, she was actually staying at our place. She has been ever since July. She didn't tell you?"

"No," she paused,

"about a year ago after her sister died, she moved away to live with her aunt and I've barely seen her in the past six months."

"... I didn't know that," I said and gave Charlie a sympathetic look as Jack stepped into the room.

"Hi, you must be Mrs. Jones, I suppose." Jack said and reached his hand out.

"I don't think she-" I started as Mrs. Jones took his hand.

"Ellen Jones," She said and smiled to Jack.

"Have you thought about heading home yet, Finn?" Jack asked and put his hand on my shoulder.

"Yeah, you probably have been here for a while. I'll take over now, and thank you for staying with her." Mrs. Jones smiled to me as I got up from my seat and went over to the door.

"Could you call us if there's any change?"

"Sure." she said as Jack and I left the room.

JACK'S POV

The car ride home was silent, and Finn didn't say anything before we had closed the front door behind us.

"Her name was actually Charlotte."

"Is, Finn. Is." I said and clapped his shoulder as I went to take my coat off.

"You want something to eat?" I asked Finn who was still standing in the hallway with his jacket on.

"Noo.. I'll just go upstairs to bed." he said and put his jacket on the floor as he went upstairs.

I walked over to the kitchen to take an apple with me and went upstairs too.

As I reached the top floor, I noticed Charlie's door was wide open, so I walked over to take a look inside.

Finn was laying on her bed and facing away as he was curled up around Charlie's pillow.

"Finn?" I whispered as I stood by the door, holding the doorknob.

He wasn't moving, so I walked over to him and pulled the bedsheet over his sleeping body and turned the lights off.
