The room Jax brought me to was beautiful. The carpet was a soft grey, the walls a light lilac, all the furnishings are white. There were two doors on the right wall, one a bathroom, the other a closet. In between the two doors was a built in bookshelf, all sorts of books filling it up, and in the middle of the bookshelf sat a tv. The queen size bed was on the opposite wall. The duvet and sheets a white silk that was smooth to touch, lilac, mesh curtains surrounded the bed. Across the room, double doors opened onto a balcony overlooking a little garden full of wild flowers, you could see the moon at this time of night. There was a beautiful, vintage white dresser beside the double doors.
Jax sat on the bed and looked at me, waiting for me to join him. When I sat I just looked at him, "Whatever it is, whatever is happening I won't let it destroy me. I've lost too much and I won't lose anything else."
Jax gently rubbed the pad of his thumb across my cheek, then into my hair. "It started in the Eastern Islands then traveled to sacred places all over the world where covens are, killing witches, faeries, warlocks, nymphs, all magic wielders. All drained of blood. The numbers were relatively small, three here, five there. Never no more than five."
Jax looked away from me and sighed. When his eyes returned to me he grabbed my hand and squeezed it so tight my bones croaked. I barely registered the pain as he continued.
"About two weeks ago it came here. Thirteen witches all dead. They were killed in Salem. Original Salem witches all of them slaughtered and drained of their blood on sacred ground. I wanted to tell you but I thought I could handle it, thought it would do nothing but bring back bad memories."
My voice felt like it was stuck in my throat. I knew my face was emotionless, my eyes nearly dead. "Who?"
Jax's eye were ablaze with fury. He knew what this was doing to me. He knew me better than anyone alive.
"We don't know. There's no trace of them anywhere. Nothing. No scent, nothing out of place, everything was wiped clean, no trace of anyone except the ones who died."
Standing up I walked to the balcony doors and just looked out. I knew what I needed to do. I knew it would be hard. But I had to do it. Because they needed me. And no one else could do what I could.
"I felt it. I felt them dying. They were so scared and they wanted help. I didn't know what it was when it happened but I felt it. Their magic latched onto me. To warn me. This is only the start."
