As contagious as a disease, yawns filled the lecture hall one after the other. After lunch, as some academics were so familiar with in Basic Studies, was the most difficult time to stay awake. Always with a buffet for every meal, the aspirants would feel stuffed and groggy right after. Not to mention breathing in the humidity of the afternoon that took all their strength away.Even the noisiest in class didn't feel like chattering at the moment.
Only Sipka and her friends seemed to be expectant and jittery. They took out their fans and kept looking at their pocket mirrors, if not adjusting their braids.
"Can you imagine having to do braids every morning?" Karys was muttering, leaning on the hand on her cheek.
Serin and Tierra just smiled. Oddly, and still to Tierra's curiosity, Maizy was taking notes. Occasionally, she would peer at Breena and her friends.
"I'd like to see you with braids, Karys." It was Memphis, his face dangerously close to hers.
"Creep!" Karys snapped, pushing him away. Memphis, of course, found it rather funny.
A cold breeze passed the lecture hall and the class soon had their share of topics.
"What's taking him so long?" they heard Sipka talking. She faced their direction. "Yes, it's a 'him'. We sat together in the caravan traveling here," she boasted, moving her shoulders as she spoke. Tierra wondered how much oil treatments she placed on her blonde mane as even the wind from her fan couldn't disarrange it.
Karys raised her eyebrows and mouthed a 'no-one-asked' to Tierra and the girls.
Footsteps echoed the hallway outside. The academics straightened.
"Sorry, I'm late!"
Tierra pursed her lips.
No wonder Sipka was so proud to announce him as company.
Their new preceptor had shaved the side of his head leaving three fat braids that looked like he had ropes as hair. They were an attractive corn field yellow, closely similar to that of Salovin's. His leather vest rested neatly on a grey fitting shirt.
