Powers That Were Achieved

Unlike everyone else, I had no powers. No special abilities. I couldn't control any particular element, which is very embarrassing for me and my family. I am the only person in the history of my village, and maybe in the world, that doesn't have the ability to bend an element to my will.

So you can tell why I was depressed for a long time.

All my life I have been made fun of, beaten, kicked, punched, burned, pushed around by air... I've been frozen and hit with rocks and earth. Heck, I almost have been cut by a sword once.

There are a lot of people in this world that suck. They sucked to the point where I couldn't take it anymore. As soon as school was over, I was going to end it all, and destroy my worthless life.

But a special visitor came over on that day. She looked very nice and friendly, and had a cheery and joyful face. She was to speak in front of our class today.

It wasn't much, but she had a powerful message: that we could do anything, as long as we think we can, as long as we are determined. That no matter where we came from, what our situation is, what the goal is, or even who we are. Our past does not matter, and in fact, none of those kinds of things matter unless we make it matter.

These were the woman's words.

"Any questions?" She asked the class. A couple of kids raised their hands. She picked Azar.

"Can I turn into a tree?" He asked, giggling. A couple of other kids giggled with him.

Our teacher shushed us. "Shh. Be quiet!"

"Well, it hasn't been done before..." the woman said, "but if you believe enough, I'm sure you'll find a way. "Where there's a will, there's a way," is what I always say. Anyone else?"

The woman answered some other kids questions. Then, she was going to leave so the teacher can continue teaching when suddenly, I had a question. I raised my hand.

"Put your hand down, Charact. It's over." The teacher said. Someone elbowed in the ribs. But still, I raised my hand.

The woman looked up from where she was packing and noticed that my hand was up. "Over there, Charact, right? You have a question?" She asked me, interrupting the lesson.

There was a warm feeling in my heart; I was glad that my feeling and wants were finally noticed. "Yeah, um... Can I get the ability to control a different element? Like, if I control water, can I train, or something, to control fire?"

Everyone but the adults full out bursted in laughter. The teacher instead scolded me, saying, "Charact! You know better than that than to ask such a stupid question!!" But before she could punish me, she hushed the classroom.

She walked slowly to me, and bent over to my level. "Your that kid who doesn't have any powers, aren't you?" I nodded, my head down, trying to hide my red cheeks. She chuckled. "Yes, Charact, you can. I believe in you. It's never been done before, and will sure as check will be hard to do, but I know you can do it." She whispered, putting her hand on my shoulder. I looked up and smiled. She smiled back. "And don't let anyone else tell you otherwise."

And with that, she got up, got her bag, and walked out of the classroom.

After that, I had decided to cancel my plan to do that... thing.

And to do the unthinkable.

I decided to start with air, since it seemed the simplest of the elements. And besides, I don't want to have to carry a large tub of water to my secret spot (since areas with water are crowded with people). And looking back, I still can't tell if it was simple or not.
