I hope you don't mind that I put down in words, how wonderful life is now that you're in it
-Unknown|Your eyes were the most beautiful things I had ever seen. They were doe-like and Technicolor, shining without a definite hue. It was like your black pupil radiated into a sort of brown that faded into a bluish green of some sort and then the edges were rimmed with a greyish blue. I wondered if they were real- if you were real. Maybe I was being irrational; you were real, but your eyes- were they contacts? Did they even make contacts that colour?
'I doubt they do. You don't know how many people think they're contacts,' you replied making me realise I had been thinking out loud. 'It's called heterochromia iridium or something. You should look it up.'
I nodded, still a bit enthralled by your eye colour. You didn't even have to tell me to look it up; I was already planning on googling it.
'And to answer your first question- yes, Greek mythology is quite interesting,' you remarked. 'Now, can I have my book back?'
You tiptoed again, leaning towards me, as you tried to snatch the book from my hand. Your close proximity must have snapped me out of my daze because I raised my hand above my head just in time before you could reach it. You pouted and I gave you a coy grin. I wagged a finger in your face.
'Uh-uh, I'm not done with you yet. 'I said, 'My name is Ezekiel, but most people call me Zee, and who are you my lovely lady?'
You curled your bottom lip into your mouth.
'I'm Eva,' you stated, 'but most people call me - wait for it- Eva.'
You broke into a grin, probably amused by your own joke. I gave you a mocking frown. My guard was off for only a second and you took advantage by leaning forward and grabbing the book from my lowered hand.
'Gotcha,' you said, your smile unwavering.
'Hey!' I remarked, 'No fair!'
You brought your index finger to your lips. 'Shhhh, this is the library.'
You couldn't suppress the giggle that escaped your mouth and you quickly covered your mouth with your hand to muffle the sound. I opened my mouth but closed it again, realising I had nothing to say because you had left me speechless.
'Cat got your tongue?' You asked, almost looking concerned but I could see the laughter lines that had formed on the edges of your eyes.
'I'm just hurt, that's all. You dare mock me, the only one who helped you in your time of distress.' I remarked dramatically.
You giggled again before acting remorseful, 'However may I repay you kind sir?'
Shakespeare would be so impressed with us.
I gave you a cocky smile.
'You could give me your number,' I replied.
You tilted you head to one side. I was still smiling but I was nervous- you made me nervous. Your forehead creased a bit and you stared at me intensely. I hope I hadn't managed to freak you out. Maybe it had been too soon to ask for your number, I mean I just met you.
I was about to say I was joking and that you didn't have to give it to me when you outstretched your hand.
'Pass me your phone,' you mentioned.
I fished it out from my pocket and you punched in your number and gave it back to me.
'Just beep me like- whenever,' you told me before flashing me that beautiful smile of yours.
'I definitely will,' I replied.
'Cool.' You chirped, 'Anyway I need to go. It was nice meeting you.'
You extended your hand as did I, and then you shook it gingerly. What a peculiar creature you were.
'Goodbye Ezekiel.' You gave me another smile before turning on your heels and walking away.
I couldn't stop the smile on my face as I replied, a little more to myself, 'Bye Eva.'

It was seven in the evening later that day and I was staring at my phone, wondering whether to text you or not. It had been a good three hours since I got back from the library and all I could think about was you. Ella had been surprised when she found me home and even more surprised when I told her I had actually gone to the library.
'I can't believe you actually went.' She had declared, 'How was it?'
'The end of my life as I know it,' I had replied teasingly.
I thought about our encounter, how you had been so light-hearted and friendly, as if you had known me for a while. You had taken my mind off everything and had been able to silence it. Now, here I was, staring at my screen, wondering how to start a conversation.
What the heck, I thought as I typed you a text.
Me: Hey.
I put my phone down and waited. It seemed like centuries before my phone beeped, and even then, it was just a text message from Kelvin telling me what an awesome party I was missing. I groaned, not even bothering to reply, and continued to wait. Finally, after an agonising eleven minutes, my phone beeped again and this time it was you.
You: Hello, I'm sorry, tremendously, but who is this?
I gave a slight frown. How many new people did you give your number to today? Or maybe you just forgot that you had met me. I refrained from giving you a straight forward answer.
Me: Option A; your prince charming. Option B; your hero & Option C; your knight in shining armour.
This time you replied almost instantly.
You: How about D; narcissistic jerk who spends his free time terrorising girls in the library.
I laughed silently, to myself.
Me: Hahaha, only if the girls are pretty with technicoloured eyes (
You: That must be enough girls to file a harassment case against you. lol
Me: hahah, nah, the ladies love me *wink*wink*
You: lol, perv
Me: don't be jealous, ur my favourite
You: And to what do I owe the pleasure?
Me: turns out ur eyes r the rarest type of heterochromia there is. And hu doesn't like rare anything?
As soon as I had gotten home I had switched on my laptop and gone to Google. By then I had forgotten the actual terns you had used so I just typed in "kaleidoscope eyes''. The first posts were about some song by The Beatles called "Lucy in a Sky of Diamonds". That was far from what I was looking for so I continued scrolling down. The next ones all talked about some drug called LSD which wasn't very promising either. One post did say that someone with "kaleidoscope eyes" was someone with technicolour eyes or someone who viewed the world in technicolour. So I typed in "technicolour eyes" instead and had better luck there.
According to Wikipedia, heterochromia was some sort of mutation caused by lack of melanin and something to do with genes and what not. They were three types and yours, Eva, was the rarest.
You: lol, are you officially obsessed with me?
Me: hahah, u told me to look it up (
You: I didn't think you'd actually do it
Me: of coz I did, researching on mutants is my specialty.
You: lol, don't tease me, I might have superpowers (
Me: And what may these powers be?
Except being completely gorgeous and charming, I mused to myself.
You: I don't disclose such over the phone lol
I took a sharp intake of breath. Maybe this was a chance for me to ask you to meet up with me, outside the library that is.
Me: then mayb u can tell me 2morro, in person, over coffee. That is assuming you like coffee.
You: lol, are you already asking me on a date? Ezekiel, I just met you.
Me: hahahah, I didn't use the word date, those r ur words. I just want to kno ur super powers.
You: lol and when you find out, what then?
Me: and then I'll hand you over to the government.
You: lol, you crack me up...... so what time?
It took me a couple of seconds to realise you were referring to my question about meeting up for coffee.
Me: hw about ten? At café noir?
You: Just about the time when I'm done saving the world.
I laughed aloud at that one. It was so easy talking to you.
Me: great, ten it is.
You didn't reply after that. I must have waited a good thirty minutes before checking the time and going down for dinner. Ella had made spaghetti and meatballs, the only dish she got right all the time. She beamed at me and I knew she was happy because I was actually there for dinner. The twins noticed my presence and tackled me happily.
'Zee! You having dinner with us?' Elijah asked. 'You not going out today.'
I smiled at him. 'Nah, spaghetti is the only dish your sister cooks right. I'll stay for this one.'
The twins broke into simultaneous grins and Ella shot me a teasing glare.
That night, for the first time in a long while, I snuggled into bed and sleep overcame me instantly without my body screaming for a cigarette.
