I sat on one of the many stools in the club next to my best friend Flo who was downing another shot even though she was already drunk as it was.
“Flo, stop that! I am not going to drag you’re ungrateful butt home if you pass out.” I said pushing the tray away and out of her reach. “You said you weren’t going to drink!”
“Oh stop being such a buzz kill! So what if I want to live a little? Huh?” Every once in a while she gets fed up of her parents and decides to punish them. I guess you can say she has her issues. I sighed as she flicked her hair over her shoulder to talk to a guy who had come up and sat down beside her. I stared at him; he looked really familiar but the dark lighting meant I couldn’t place where I had seen him before. I heard him introduce himself as Harry; which only worked to emphasize the familiarity. Being a nice friend, and not wanting to look like a total reject, I let her have some time alone with him. He was insanely fit; with curly hair, warm brown eyes and a cocky smile. Flo would kill me if I cock blocked. Standing up I ambled around until I found another seat where I could keep an eye on her in case she did something stupid in her drunken state. Being the definition of irresponsible when intoxicated, she needed watching. It was certainly frustrating for her parents. Flo could be really sensible, had potential to be really clever, and rarely partied hard… but when she did it put the 60’s to shame.
After 15 minutes of watching her laugh and play a drinking game, I’d had enough. I tried to storm my way across the floor but there were people in the way, so I reached them just as another guy came towards them from the other side.
“Hey Harry, who’s this?” said the new guy, indicating Flo. I stood beside Flo’s stool holding her shoulders to stop her tipping sideways, she was not only irresponsible, but uncoordinated when drunk. I looked the newcomer over. He too looked really familiar. It was so annoying, instantly distrust bloomed in my mind. Where do I know these guy’s from? He had brown hair that was straight, but styled to randomly stick up in places. Behind his gorgeous smile I could see the worry in his eyes for Harry. Apparently I wasn't the only one who had to keep an eye on drunken friends.
“Hey! Louis!” yelled Harry. He was completely smashed. “This is Flo. She’s my new friend.” Flo gave a little giggle, blushing slightly. Friend? Now was the time for me to butt in.
“Yeah, and who’s this Flo?” I asked her. She smiled widely; this guy had seriously won her over (which can’t have been hard since she was completely drunk).
“This is Harry. Harry meet Marnie, Marnie meet Harry.” I forced a smile for him and he grinned in return, showing dimples that didn’t suit a guy of around 20.
“So Flo-” and with that Harry and Flo started chatting drunkenly; completely forgetting we were standing there listening. I felt completely invisible. I saw movement and looked up to see Harry’s friend coming round to stand next to me.
“Hi, you’re Flo’s friend?” I nodded, not really wanting to tell a stranger anything. “My name’s Louis, that drunken idiot there is my friend Harry.” I took his outstretched hand and smiled slightly.
“You want to grab a seat? We can watch them from here.” He pointed to two seats not far away where we could easily keep an eye out for our friends. I let him lead me over but on the way there I got bumped into, and felt my bag fall off my arm. The stranger picked it up for me, apologized and walked off before Louis and I sat down. I had my back to Flo and Harry but Louis could see them perfectly over my shoulder, so I trusted him to tell me if Flo were to pass out or something equally dramatic.
