Newt and I make casual conversation and we slowly make our way to a dark part of Newts case. I am confused at first, seeing nothing but darkness. I soon stand corrected as I lay my eyes upon an enormous, glowing blue cube. It wiggled and appeared to have the texture of jelly. The only thing holding the cube in place is a giant net that covers the whole exterior of the cube.
My jaw drops and Newt chuckles next to me. Its as if all my childhood dreams are coming true. I release myself from Newts arm and slowly approach the wobbly cube of blue jelly. There are dozens of creatures that I have never seen before. There's a strange beast that looks to have the torso and head of a lion, but the tail of a fish. There's also a strange crab-octopus type of creature, which Newt eventually informs me that it's called a grindylow.
Suddenly a flash of yellow zips past my field of vision. My eyes follow the blur until it begins to slow down. It appears to be half human, half fish. My mouth gapes open as I begin to realize what it is. "Is that...?" Newt nods next to me as he studies my face and smiles. "Mermaid." He finally says. I feel memories from my childhood flood back to me inside my brain. 'This...is amazing...' Its as if my childhood dream has finally come to life! Only, its not just a fantasy. Not anymore.
The merperson approaches Newt and slowly. She stops right in from of us, but remains behind the surface of the watery cube. She tilts its head, staring strait at me, as if she's studying me. I smile and give her a small wave.
'What are you?' She asks. I slightly giggle at the question. "I'm a muggle. At least that's what I'm told." I reply, not realizing I had said it out loud. Newt gives me a blank stare,"I know full well that you're a muggle, (Y/N)." I suddenly tense up and avoid eye contact with Newt. "Oh...um, right." I laugh slightly, brainstorming for a way to explain why I had just randomly said that.
Newt stood there, still as rock, as if I were a new fantastic beast that he had stumbled upon. He studied me as I continued fidgeting with my finger nails. He looked from me, to the mermaid, and than back to me. "Did you somehow communicate with her?" Newt asked, gesturing to the mermaid. "Uh, well, I..." I trip over my words as he mermaid swims away, out of boredom I suppose, and vanishes into the blue water.
Newt takes a step closer to me, his fingers gently grazing my arm. I shift at the sudden contact and look to Newts face. His oceans stare into my soul, pleading for an explanation. A true explanation.
I nod, replying to Newts earlier question. Newt smiles, knowing that I am being truthful. "Well, how? How-- how did you do it? You didn't even speak, you didn't even open your mouth!" He exclaims as he takes both my hands in his and begins to ask questions like an excited kid wanting to know how something works.
"I heard her voice." I reply. Newt gives me a confused look. "She didn't speak either." He says. I shake my head, "No, I heard her in my mind." I explain, pointing to my temple as I do so. Newts eyes widen and his lips slightly part. "That's not possible. You're a muggle." I shrug, not knowing what to say.
He stares me down one more time before quickly clutching my hand and pulling me in the direction of his little shack. "N-newt what are you doing?" I stutter, attempting to keep up with Newts quick pace. "Come now, we mustn't delay. We will be arriving very soon." He replys, a hint of excitement in his voice.
We arrive at the small wooden shack and Newt quickly enters. "Arriving where?" I question, not really knowing where we were going in the first place. "England." He says as I enter and he begins his way up the wooden ladder. "And from the dock, we shall apparate to a place that is very dear to me." I follow him up, reaching the top. "And where is that?" I question as Newt offers me his hand and helps me from his case. "My old school," he says with a smile. "Hogwarts."
