"Mom she's back," yells Kennedy.
"What did you say? Stop screaming and come talk to my face, I am on the phone!" Mom yells back.
"I said, MADDIE IS BACK!" Ken's voice is about ten times louder.
I start to creep my way up the stairs, when Kennedy blocks my path: "No no no sister, I will be happy to escort to the dinner table, where I will witness you being grounded for life!"
"What an amazing sister you are. Thanks so much for always having my back!" I say with a large amount of sarcasm in my voice. Then I make a face at her.
Kennedy makes the letter L with her hand and puts it against her forehead, while making the same face back. What a turd. Mom rushes out of the kitchen with the phone in her hand.
"Never mind. She's here... thanks for your help," mom says as she hangs up. Then she looks at me. There's anger in her eyes. Lots of anger.
"Madison Christine Melberg, where have you been? I was just on the phone with the police filing a missing person! And Madison, do you know who that person was?" She doesn't give me time to respond.
"YOU Madison. You!" I think we both already knew the answer to that question.
Now, mom looks relieved- that's good news. Things start to take a turn when she hugs me like I am stuffed animal: "Ow mom. Too tight."
"Sorry, Maddie. Now will you please tell me why you didn't come home with your sister?"
Once again she doesn't give me time to answer: "Was it a boy? Maddie you can talk to me!"
I guess part of the reason I was late was because of the green eyed boy, but I don't think that's what she is talking about: "It was Kennedy's fault! She left Meg's house without me! And made me walk!"
"KENNEDY! COME DOWN HERE RIGHT THIS INSTANT" Mother yells up the stairs.
"Mom, I thought you said no more screaming?" says a snarky Kennedy.
"Young lady don't you talk to me like that! You have one minute to explain yourself, or else you get no car privileges for the rest of the month."
Kennedy quickly ascends down the stairs- it's pretty easy to tell that she's as scared as I was.
"Go on, my eldest daughter. Please, reason with me." Mom says.
"Fine. Maddie took too long getting ready to leave from Meg's house, so I left without her. It's a school night and I had to finish my homework," her story isn't very convincing, and my mom seems to think so too.
"'A school night,'" my mom mimics, "nice try but that excuse isn't working for me missy. The whole point was for you to go pick up your younger sister from her friend's house! You couldn't even do that?"
"I guess not!" Kennedy replies
"What did I say about talking back? No more car privileges!"
"But mom! It was Maddie's fault!" whines Ken.
"I don't want to hear it!" Mom says as Kennedy rushes back upstairs.
I am still standing where I have been the whole time and laughing my head off. It really does amuse me when my sister gets punished for some stupid reason.
Mom looks at me again: "Don't think you are going unpunished either. You are 15 years old and should be able to take care of yourself. It's not all your sister's fault.
I completely disagree that it is my fault I had to walk home, but I am way too tired to argue after all that running. Time to hit the hay.
