I glanced at Kongpope who was walking the other way as I made my way to my apartment. I was wondering why it bothered me that Kongpope was a bit absent minded after we finished shopping. His mood picked up a little while we were eating. I kept remembering his answer about my haircut.
'I'm the one who is having a tough time.'
Why did his response make me blush? What did he mean? He reminded me of a puppy sometimes. It frustrated me why his moods affected me so much.
When I got to my door, I saw water flowing from underneath. I opened the door quickly to find the floor flooded. I ran to the bathroom to turn off the water valve. The pipe had burst and it made quite a mess. I quickly grabbed some rags to clean up and made a call to the building manager.
A few minutes into cleaning, my phone rang. It was Kongpope.
'Hello.'
'Sawadeekhap P'Arthit. You forgot your card in my bag.'
'Oh right...I can't come down right now. Bring it...Oh shit! My textbooks!'
I hung up trying to save my textbooks that I had in a pile in the corner of my room.
A few minutes later, there was a knock on the doors.
'Come in.'
Kongpope walked, 'P'Arthit! What happened?'
'Pipe burst.'
My cell phone rang again and it was my father. I had sent him a message earlier.
'Sawadeekhap Dad...I talked to the building maintenance. They can get it fixed in two days. Don't worry. I'll stay at a friend's place. Tell mother not to worry too. Okay. Take care.'
I turned around to find Kongpope already cleaning up. I had a flashback to when he came to my room and took care of me after I hurt my ankle running laps. I watched him putter about my room mopping. He seemed like he did this kind of thing all the time.
I called Prem to see if I could stay at his place tonight.
'Prem..what are you up to?'
'Helping my mother. Got guests coming over tonight.'
'Right.'
'What's wrong?'
'Nothing...I'll talk to you later Prem.'
I called Knott next.
'Hey, Arthit.'
'Knott...what are you doing?'
'I'm at my code members' party.'
'Right...have fun. I'll talk to you later then.'
'Something wrong?'
'Nothing. Bye.'
I sighed as I ended the call. I knew Bright lived with roommates and probably wouldn't be able to accommodate me. Toota lived a bit far and I would have to bus it there. I didn't want to bother anyone. Maybe I should just sleep at school.
'P'Arthit?'
I turned around and looked at Kongpope.
'You can stay in my room. I live by myself.'
I was surprised by his offer. but then, I remembered his friend telling P'Minnie that he can visit Kongpope's dorm since he lived alone.
'You sure?'
'Yes, P'. It's the least I can do after you helped me shop for my niece.'
'Okay. Thanks.'
I grabbed an overnight bag and packed some clothes and grabbed my textbooks for tomorrow.
After we cleaned up, we headed out and went to a building that was quite close to my place. His place was very neat, unlike mine. Everything was organized and in its place.
'Okay, P'Arthit. Take a shower, I'll be right back.'
I took a quick shower and changed into a t-shirt and shorts. I was toweling my hair when I opened the balcony door and stepped out to hang the towel.
I opened it and looked out. The weather was getting a bit chilly and I casually glanced across to the other side. Wasn't that my room? It was my room!
My heart jumped a little. He lived right across my dorm room.
'OH MY GOD!'
What the hell? Why did he never mention this? Was he spying on me? Was he secretly laughing at me? Was he telling the other freshman about me?
Kongpope returned with some egg rice and pink milk for me. He smiled as he set up the table.
'Kongpope?'
'Yes, P'Arthit?'
'Why didn't you tell me you lived right across from me?'
'You never asked me.' He smiled like usual.
'Kongpope! Don't act smart. Why didn't you tell me?'
Silence.
Kongpope's face turned serious. His eyes were unwavering as he held my gaze. I unconsciously pulled myself a bit back since I was leaning over the table.
'P'Arthit...am I the only one who knows you like pink milk? Am I the only one who knows you like spicy food? Am I the only one who knows your nickname is Oon? Am I the only one who knows you don't like to wake up early?'
'Kongpope!'
There he goes making fun of me again.
'P'Arthit...I want to be the only one who knows these things about you.'
'So...what! All this...do you have feelings for me?'
He didn't say anything.
'P'Arthit...the food is getting cold.'
There was no conversation after that. We ate in silence and Kongpope cleaned up. I was in bed when he finished his shower. I felt the bed creak as he laid down on the other side. I moved and faced the other way. I was feeling a bit awkward.
I was regretting that I asked that question.
