South Side Chicago wasn't a place people visited by free will. When you drove through the dodgy area, you'd lock your car doors and say a prayer. Most avoided the place all together -- and no one blamed them. You only ever heard about South Side on the news when there was a murder or robbery, which was an everyday occurrence. But growing up there? You learn to adapt.

You learn to not even blink an eye when you're walking on the street and pass by someone breaking into someone's car, when you pass by a drug deal in broad daylight, hearing screams and gunshots. You swore, fought, drank cheap liquor and if you were smart enough, you carried a gun. You quickly learned who the people to stay the hell away from were, and the ones you needed on your side. There wasn't much to do there, other than drugs and have sex; which might've explained why the teen pregnancy and drug use was so high.

Dysfunctional families wasn't an unusual thing in South Side, not even in the slightest. But the Gallaghers? They take the cake. With a drunk for a dad, a mom that took off, and an older sibling who had to give up their life to raise their younger siblings was what you got when it came to the Gallagher family.

Fiona was the oldest and main caretaker. She was the surrogate mother and was the only reason they all had a roof over their head. Sure, everyone pitched in, but Fiona did the bulk of the work. She dropped out of high school when their mother left and stepped up. She cares for them, loves them, and is always there for them; more of a mother then any of them have known.

Next was Lip, the second oldest. He was smart, some would even call him a genius. He never needed to study and could skip class as much as he wanted and still pass the class. He didn't know what he wanted, but knew school wasn't it. Everyone was counting on him to be the first Gallagher to go to College, something he wasn't planning on fulfilling. He made as much money as he could to help out, no matter how illegal. He cared tremendously for his siblings.

Third we have, Ellie, Lip's younger twin sister. Ellie was born twelve minutes after yet seemed as if she was twelve years older. She was extremely mature and had her eye set on one thing; getting the hell out of South Side. She slipped up every now and then, doing drugs and sleeping around, but she always took school seriously.

Fourth was Ian; the ginger of the family that for some reason strangely looked like one of Frank's brothers. He was strong and independent and very confused. He didn't know who he was, or what he wanted. He was one way and had many telling him otherwise. He enjoyed pleasing others and sometimes forgot about himself.

Next, is Debbie, the only innocent one left (besides Liam). Debbie still had faith left in Frank, still loved him, still had faith in him. She hadn't been through some of the things Fiona, Lip, Ellie and Ian had been through with their parents. She still saw Frank as just her dad, not an alcoholic screw up -- which he was. She tried her best to help her family stay afloat.

Then, we have Carl, the second to last eldest. He was quiet, the only introvert out of the bunch. Him and Debbie were like Ellie and Lip -- close. He observed his surroundings and never missed a thing, saving everything for a day when it would come in handy. He wasn't good at school, helping out, or caring about others. Ellie sometimes worried he'd end up being a sociopath or psychopath.

And, finally, there's Liam. He's a toddler and everyone is pretty sure the love child from Monica and one of Frank's sponsors kid. He's an adorable little brown boy that is truly innocent, everyone looking after him and not wanting his childhood to be anything like theirs.

Ellie was a perfect mix of Monica and Frank; Monica's blonde hair and Frank's blue eyes, something she never forgot when she looked in the mirror. Watching Ellie Gallagher is like watching a car crash; powerful, yet destructive. She's incredibly talented and ambitious to the extreme, yet her own single mindedness gets her in trouble time and time again. She's mean but not nasty, which means endless hours of entertainment. She doesn't let anyone talk crap. Or stutter. Or basically be average. She's the best at what she does, so she expects everyone else to be as well. It's empowering. She doesn't let her being from South Side or have a shitty home life hold her back.

Ellie Gallagher was strong. She never accepted defeat and didn't give up. She didn't care about how the odds weren't in her favor -- and trust me they weren't. She loved proving people wrong and seeing the look on their face; she'd be damned if she would just turn into another statistic.

She pops pills and smokes pot and drinks the night away like she just doesn't care, because she truly doesn't. Sometimes she wanted to give up, she truly did. But she couldn't. She had 4 younger siblings looking up to her, and 2 older counting on her. She tried her best to be good and do good and say only good.

Ellie was fairly popular at school (and around South Side). Everyone knew not to mess with her because she had no problem decking someone in the face, regardless of your gender or social class. Also, Lip and Ian would totally kick their ass. Ellie wasn't afraid because nobody fucks with the Gallaghers.
