The first car shows up, filled with Rick, Connie, Lauren, and Lindsey, closely followed by Kirstie, Peyton, Kevin, Todrick, and Dominic. A sinking feeling starts in my stomach when Jake and Alex also show up, but Anna is nowhere to be seen. After all of our friends are inside, I linger by the door for a moment, watching each car as it passes the house.

"Mitch?" Jake shows up at my side, setting his hand on my shoulder. I look back at him.

"Where is she?"

"I...she said she wasn't sure if she was gonna come or not."

"Oh." I feel my heart shatter. "That's okay. I haven't seen her in a long time anyway, why change that now?" I walk away from the door, kicking it lightly shut behind me, and go over to Scott.

"I can't believe all of you guys flew in from Florida." he says with a chuckle, sitting down on the couch. I immediately move to the spot next to him.

"Of course we did. Sorry, Mitch, I kinda told everyone." Kirstie says, beaming.

"I would expect nothing less from you." I gnaw on my lip and fixate my gaze on the floor board, behind everyone.

"Hey. You okay?" Todrick says, knitting his eyebrows together.

"Yeah, fine." I lift my head and force a smile. "Um, I'll be right back." I walk out of the room and straight to the kitchen, filling a glass with water and quickly downing it.

"Mitch?" Scott comes in and closes the kitchen door, giving us a little privacy. I can hear in his tone that something is wrong.

"What?" I fill the glass again, but this time I just stare into the water mindlessly.

"Are you okay?"

"I just...wanted to believe that Anna would actually come." I scoff. "It was stupid of me to think that."

"No, it wasn't stupid." Scott says softly, but even his gentle tone isn't enough to calm the swells of anger crashing against one another inside me.

"Fine, naive then!" I shout, slamming my glass down on the counter so hard it shatters, leaving my hand a bloody mess. "Fuck. I don't need this shit right now."

"Mitch-"

"Don't. Just please, be quiet." I turn toward the sink and run cold water over my hand, watching as the liquid runs pink and then finally clear. "I'm sorry. You didn't do anything and you don't deserve me getting mad at you."

"Do you want me to help wrap your hand up?"

"Please." He walks over to me and wraps his arms around my waist, landing a short kiss on my forehead before leading me out of the kitchen, past our guests, and up to the bathroom to clean up my hand appropriately.
