Shortly after Alex finished reading the letter, the kids came downstairs. "Hi, my name is Alex," she said. "My name is Megan and this is Riley. I am 7 and he is 5," Megan said. The two kids had light brown hair and brown eyes. Alex recognized them from somewhere but she couldn't think where she knew them from seeing as how she had never been to this house before. In fact, she had never even seen the parents before. "Maybe they recently moved here," Alex thought to herself.
After a few minutes the kids decided to watch TV. The kids didn't talk much. There was barely an expression of emotion on their faces either. Nonetheless they were good kids so Alex didn't mind looking after them.
The thought of not going to the attic was still fresh in Alex's mind. How would I even get to the attic? Aren't most attic doors on the ceiling?" Her curiosity got the better of her. "I'll be back in a few minutes. I just have to go to the washroom, OK?" She asked. Alex went upstairs determined to see the door to the attic. She wasn't planning on going into the attic, she just wanted to see where it was. Upstairs there was a hallway. At the very end there was a door that looked just a bit different from the others. Hanging from the attic door was a sign that read: DO NOT ENTER ATTIC.
As much as Alex wanted to peek in and see what the big deal was, she decided not to because it seemed to be a big rule. Something about going up there felt wrong anyways. Alex went back down stairs to return to the kids. "Did you actually go to the washroom?" asked Riley. "No. I didn't have to anymore," replied Alex. "Did you go to the attic?" he questioned worriedly. "No I didn't." "Good," said Megan. "Yeah because it's bad in there," Riley whispered.
Megan shot him a look as if they weren't supposed to talk about it. They continued to watch TV for a bit more when the phone rang. Alex remembered that she wasn't supposed to answer the phone so she let it ring. The phone rang five times before it stopped, which is normal for a phone. A few minutes later the phone rang again. Alex ignored it again. But this time it only rang twice as if someone had answered it. "Maybe they just hung up on the other end," Alex thought, reassuring herself. She was a bit shaken up though. "I know who answered the phone," Riley said. "Who answered the phone?" Alex asked nervously. "It was the man upstairs. He answered the phone."
