"Maddy, come on, wake up!" My dad shouted from the kitchen. I whined loudly, but sat up. I'm eighteen and my dad is waking me up at seven thirty in the morning because he hates me. Not really, he just wants me to go to work with him so I can help him. He works in the courthouse as a bailiff.

I am Maddlynn Marie Murphy. I'm eighteen, as I've stated before, and my birthday is May fourteenth. My parents are divorced and both of them remarried. I have four siblings, my older brother, my older step-sister (my step moms daughter), my older step-brother (my step dad's son), and my younger half sister (my mom and stepdads daughter). I live with my dad right now because it's closer to my college, but I go to my moms a lot. I haven't started school yet, but I moved in with my dad early so I could get everything ready. My stepmom and I don't get along, but I have to live with them. I live in Louisiana. Born and raised.

I got out of bed and quickly changed into a pair of black leggings and a Holy Cross t-shirt. My brother graduated from there, it's an all boys high school. I pulled on my white converse, grabbed my wallet and walked out. My dad was standing in the living room.

"Ready?" I nodded and we walked out. As we drove to the courthouse, my phone rung, playing the chorus of Dangerous Woman. I glanced at it and saw an unknown number texted me.

(***)-***-****: hey

Confused, I debated on whether or not I should answer it. I bit my lip and thought what the hell?

Me: um hi? Who is this?

I stared at my phone as they began typing.

(***)-***-****: its dylan. We met at that restaurant last night

I think whoever he met gave him the wrong number and I don't know if I should laugh or not.

Me: um, I think you were given the wrong number, dylan.

He typed back pretty quickly. I wonder if he goes to school or works.

Dylan: this isn't Katherine?

Obviously not, idiot.

Dylan: so, then what's your name?

Do I tell him my name? I mean, it's not like he can find me from just my first name right? Idiot, he has your phone number. Oh, yeah. Oops.

Me: I'm Maddlynn, but most people call me Maddy or Mads.

I don't know why I told him all of that. I could've just said my name was Maddy. Oh well.

Dylan: it's very nice to meet you😊

Me: you too. I have to go now. I have class. Bye, dylan.

Yes, I lied, but he doesn't need to know that. I'm way too awkward and I don't know him. He could be some fifty year old pervert for all I know.

Dylan: bye Maddy

My dad parked in the small parking lot of the courthouse and looked at me.

"Who were you texting?" He raised an eyebrow.

"It was a wrong number." I shrugged. He nodded. We climbed out of the old van and walked inside. I used to come here when I was younger and lived with my dad, so most of the people know me. We walked into my dads office and I sat in his chair. He was the only one here right now, well out of his office. I logged into his computer and started playing solitaire. He laughed, shaking his head.

"What?" I asked, narrowing my eyes at my father.

"Nothing. Do you want a poptart?" I nodded. "S'mores or chocolate fudge?"

"Chocolate fudge." I said, going back to my solitaire game.
