CHAPTER SEVEN
-Faust's Point of View-
I didn't know what came over Toby.
He set us back on our progress of escaping—farther than when we had met.
"You're doing great, Faust." the woman testing me reassured. "You just keep on doing what your doing. When the doctor sees how well his procedure went...he'll realize just how amazing you truly are."
I didn't reply, but only looked away. Ever since Toby had surrendered, I hadn't seen him. The doctors all had us separated for our own tests.
It hurts to give in to someone's demands. Especially when have know idea where you are, and even WHAT you are.
Maybe Toby was right. No one would come for him, or me, or the girl named Jewel...
Why would her name be Jewel, anyway? Wouldn't that be the name of a pet for something?
"Faust?"
I jumped at my name. I turned to the woman and remained expressionless. "What is it?"
"Let's take a break. How about we get dinner? It's about that time."
"I don't want to eat anything. Especially alone."
It was weird. Normally I wasn't bothered by being alone. Yet, the thought of other beings also being trapped in this building surprisingly...concerned me. I wanted to know if they were safe. Especially the girl...
"Come on, Faust. You can't stop eating food. That will make your test results inaccur—"
"I don't care about your research! There's got to be a LEGAL way to do this. Something that doesn't involve me; a clone! Or Toby. He didn't want this. That's why my personality was destroyed and forgotten."
The woman stared at me, then tossed her clipboard she was holding on a nearby counter.
"And not to mention Celestial Tempo. It's gone, and you took it without permission from the owner, which is me."
"Look, Faust," the woman replied. "I don't know why the boss took the bey, but it was probably for the best. But beys aren't my field of work."
I closed my eyes, turning around. I didn't want to look at the woman's face again... "I'm not going to eat unless that girl is with me."
Immediately, the woman sighed. She walked over to the phone, which was on the lab counter. All I did was stand there, stubborn as a bull.
That is, until I heard the phone call she made.
"Doctor, I have a concern." she began.
"Yes, what is it?" I heard the doctor reply.
"He refuses to eat unless the girl is with him or something. I don't know..."
Then I heard the man sigh. "I don't think he realizes that she CAN'T even eat."
I jumped at the comment. My stomach formed knots, and my throat contracted.
What did he mean she couldn't eat?
"Doctor, he doesn't realize that—"
"What do you mean she can't eat?" I interjected. What hadn't they been telling me?
There was a slight knock on the door and a brief click, as if he had unlocked it with a card, before I saw who had come in: the doctor himself.
I immediately wished that I had Tempo on me, or any bey for that matter. That way I could whip it out and escape from this room with ease. But they took away anything that involved a bey after what had happened.
"Faust, I can't have you go on a hunger strike. It affects your test results."
"I don't care if I starve!" I snapped back.
"Faust, Jewel is not going to eat with you."
"Why not?"
The doctor paused, looking down at me and adjusting his lab coat a little. He sighed, rolling his head back as if to stretch his neck.
"She's an android."
I gasped, not believing what I had just heard. An android? Her movements were so smooth...they were that of a human's!
Then I realized.
That's why she was set to run in a maze. They were testing her body movements...and overall intelligence with the maze.
The question was, why did she hate it so much if she was a robot? Perhaps it was because she simply wanted to help me and Toby? Or was she programmed to have...judgement!
It came to me. The doctor wanted to test her in the maze to know her skill in judgment. He'd probably set he maze pattern at random and had the android use programmed senses to judge where the end of the maze would be.
She'd just seemed so real...
"She's one of a kind!" the doctor marveled. "My very own: Juliane 3.0. And I've got to say, I'm impressed with her. She and you are one of my best projects: a clone and a robot. But I can't forget about my most important one."
"And what's that?" I snapped.
"The Tempo you gladly handed to me. It's most certainly one of a kind."
My entire being burned with anger.
Now I seemed REALLY upset.
