Chapter 4
We had just finished eating dinner when we decided to head over to the library, just so that we could finish a couple of essays and study. Newt and I had just sat next to each other, and Jennifer and Kelly were across from us, sitting in separate chairs.
"What goes into a polyjuice potions? Hm... I know! Lacewing flies, leeches, powdered bircorn horn, fluxweed, shredded boomslang skin, and a part of the person that you want to turn into. But I just know that I'm forgetting an ingredient," Jennifer said.
"Knotgrass," said a female voice from behind us.
I looked up to see Leta Lestrange, a girl with dark brown hair, and dark eyes, that made you feel like she could stare right into your soul. Her pale face constantly had a smirk on it, and I absolutely hated it. I completely disliked her, even though I had always acted nice around her. I only did that because Newt and her were good friends as well. The only people who knew that I didn't like her were Kelly and Jennifer, and neither of them liked her either.
"I already finished mine," Leta said, sounding proud and full of herself. She sat down right next to Newt, making my blood boil, but I tried not to show it.
"Lucky, this is taking forever!" I said, trying my hardest to make small talk.
"Yes. Well, I care about my studies, so I try my absolute hardest to focus on them as much as possible, with no people to distract me from them," she smirked, eyeing me down.
"Yes, but time with friends is also... quite important," Newt said, looking at me with a small smile.
"That is very true, Newton" she said, fixing his tie as if flirting with him. "Well, I'm going to go to bed early tonight. Goodnight, Newton!" she said, leaving.
"Night," we all said, trying to sound as nice as possible. I still wanted to wash my mouth out with soap afterwards.
We continued to help each other study an write until curfew, when we all went back to the dormitories to sleep.
" I'll see you tomorrow, Newt" I said.
"You as well." he said, with a grin on his face.
When we finally got into the room, I put my bag on my bed, and flopped on it out of exhaustion. I could hear Kelly and Jennifer's voices behind me.
"Ugh, that Leta girl. Oh, how I wish I could..." Kelly hissed in a quiet voice.
"You really weren't studying today, were you, Crystal?" Jennifer asked.
"Yes, actually. We were studying," I said, trying my best to sound believable.
"Crystal, come on. We know that you're lying. Honestly, this is why you aren't in Slytherin. Please tell us, did you finally go on a date with him?" Kelly asked.
"What? No. No date," I said, sounding quite offended. "We were hanging out with each other all day. Um... talking about magical creatures," I said, trying not to spill the beans about the case, but my excuse was technically true.
"And?" Kelly asked, sounding interested.
"And nothing. Look, nothing happened between us, but I promised him I wouldn't tell anyone, okay? But we were talking about magical creatures," I hissed.
"Okay, we believe you. We'll stop asking questions, now let's go to sleep," Kelly groaned.
We lied down, and turned out the lights. I curled up in my yellow-and-black Hufflepuff quilt, ready to go to bed, when I heard Kelly's voice.
"But did you snog?"
I groaned and went to bed.
I woke up the next morning, with the freshly risen sun arming up my face. It was comforting, but it reminded me of my need to get up. So, with yesterday gone, and tomorrow replaced with today, I got ready for this one. Us three girls left the dormitory together, as always, and headed to the common room. I saw Newt sitting on the couch, drawing something. He looked up, making eye contact with me. He smiled, filling up the room with a bright, happy warmth. He shoved everything into his messenger bag, and walked over to us.
"Morning, Newt, " Kelly said.
"Morning," he said, avoiding eye contact with her.
"Come on, let's go get some breakfast," I said.
We all headed to the Great Hall for breakfast. We sat at our table, and chatted about random things, until we all finished our food.
"So what's everyone's plans today?" I asked.
"I have to tutor some first years today," Kelly said, annoyed with this new chore.
"I still have an essay to do, I haven't even started and it's due Tuesday. Honestly, I totally forgot until last night," Jennifer said, with a slight giggle.
"Newt?" I asked, cocking my head.
"Oh, um... I was hoping that maybe we'd be able to work on some... work together?" he said, unsure of himself.
"Sure!" I said, happy to comply.
I saw Jennifer and Kelly smirking and giggling under their breaths at me, and so, I rolled my eyes at them. We soon parted our ways.
"So, are we actually doing school or not?" I asked, out of curiosity.
"Both, actually. I figured we could work on some Care of Magical Creatures work and that can help us with our project, and work on some other schoolwork," he said giddily.
"Great! But where are we going to work on this?"
"I was thinking by the lake. It's... very nice today, even though it's the middle of Autumn, but I have some blankets," he said, pointing to his bag.
"That's perfect!" I said, delighted.
We walked out to the lake, and set a checkered blanket on the ground under a tree. We each had our own blankets to be under, as well.
"So... What were you working on this morning?" I questioned.
"This," he said, pulling out some parchment,
It was a bunch of sketches in ink. It was hard to make out at first, since it looked a bit rushed, but I could soon see it : Drawings of more pens and habitats for the creatures to be in. Amazing what simple black ink could do on a paper- stain it forever, the black on the tan, creating anything, from a person, to potions homework.
"Newt, this is amazing! Both your ideas, and your sketches!" I complemented.
"Oh, thank you! I was, um, up early with some ideas... and just had to get them down to show you," He said, bashfully, with his pasty, freckled face becoming redder and redder.
"Well," I said, "Let's start planning."
