“Evie, wake up.”
I groan at the familiar voice trying to break into my sleep and swat the hand away that threatens to pull back the covers.
“Five more minutes, Glen.” I grumble pulling the sheet over my head sheltering from the light that pours into the room.
“Evie! Get up!” the voice yells louder this time causing me to pull the cover back ever so slightly.
“Danny?” I ask confused, the look in Danny’s eyes says it all and everything comes flooding back.
I lift my heavy body up into a sitting position, but something caught my attention. Glen was lying on the floor by the bed snoring loudly. My eyes tear their way from Glen to Danny who was now sitting on the bottom of my bed, he was looking at something.
“Danny?” I ask as his forehead crumples a hand pointing to my arms. The pain barely a dull ache. Failing to suppress a gasp I run my fingers over the blotches on them and start to cry, waking Glen up in the process.
“Ouch, my fucking head. Why am I on the floor? What happened?” Glen groans inundating the both of us with questions which we deflect.
Danny walks me still sobbing to the bathroom. Shutting the door he sits me down on the side of the bath as he runs it.
“Are you ok?” he asks quietly, searching the cupboards, pouring bubbles in for me. I absentmindedly watch him pottering around the bathroom for towels and things. I never really took much notice of him in this way before..
“Evie?” he questions, not facing me.
“I’m ok, it’s just a bit of a shock. I didn’t think my arms would look like this..” I mumble, my teeth clamping on my lip to hold back tears.
“Evie! What’s happened are you ok!” I jump up suddenly as Glen knocks shouting for me outside the door. I go to take a step forward but I’m blocked by Danny who goes to answer the door, only a small way so he can’t see in. It doesn’t mean I can’t hear.
“What’s going on? Why are you here? What’s wrong with her?” he asks, speaking double time.
“You got drunk again.” He snaps. After a pause he speaks again.
“What did I do...”
“See for yourself.” Danny snaps, opening the door so he can see me. As soon as he does I’m enveloped in a hug.
“Look at her arms Glen!” Danny shouts making us both jump, the rushing of the water turned off.
He gasps as he runs his hand over them like I did not ten minutes earlier. Tears swim in his eyes as he realizes what he’s done. But I don’t really pay much attention, Danny was standing there picking more things for the bath. The way he moves...
“Evie..I’m so, so sorry. I...I can’t believe I hurt you..” he cried pulling me into a hug again.
Danny’s stopped moving and stands awkwardly by the door. Running his hand through his hair, my teeth catching my bottom lip.
“I...you accused me and Danny of sleeping t-together.” I mumble, pulling on my pyjama cuffs awkwardly.
“Shit, I’m so sorry. Evie, I didn’t know what I was doing.” He insists
“it’s the drink Glen. If you’re going to carry on drinking I can’t do this...” I sob clutching onto the cuff even tighter.
“I promise I won’t..” he insists again .
“Remember the last time you promised. You still drank. The baths getting cold. Thank you Danny.” I look up to Danny who’s picking at his fingernails.
