Tick, tock.  Danny’s taking longer to get ready than I thought.   My feet tap together, call me Dorothy.  Jesus, he’s taking ages.

“Danny! Hurry up!” I yell up from the sofa, I really don’t want to go to this party and Danny knows it.. He’s only just told me Glen’s going to be there, sly git.  I look down at my body in this dress, black and tight I look like a hooker.

“Stupid dress..” I mutter, clicking my heels together again.

“Will you stop that infernal clicking! And the dress is stunning so shh” Danny giggles from behind me, his face catches my attention...again.

“you ok?” he mumbles, slurred by the food he’s eating.

“I’m pissed off with you.” I snap. He’s at my side in an instant, his face fixed in confusion.

“What now?”

“You’re making me go to this stupid party!” I whine, tears decide to ruin my unwanted make up. I’m pulled in his arms instantly but I don’t feel any better for it. I want Glen, well I would if he wasn’t a drunk.

“What is it little one?” he soothes stroking my hair. No, no. I don’t want to kiss him. I quickly brush the thought off and drag up a response.

“I don’t want to see Glen he’s going to be drunk...” I sniff, abruptly standing up picking my slipping self restraint off the floor. He looks up at me wide eyed;

“What?”

“Come on O’Donoghue! We’ve got a party to get too!” I giggle and extend a hand.

“Alright!  That’s what I like to hear!”

And we’re gone.

The party’s in full swing when we arrive, Danny gives my hand a reassuring squeeze as my eyes fix to Glen, he’s sitting the bar smiling and laughing with Mark. He looks happy and even sober.

“Come on, you get a drink and meet me on the dance floor yeah? Go and talk to him, otherwise I’ll have to have you in my house again if not! And I don’t want that!” he laughs, before skipping off. Leaving me to stare at my feet before gathering up the courage to go and talk to him, my own boyfriend. Madness.

“Evie!” the cheery voice of my brother, shrieks in my ear provoking a quick turnaround from me.  As soon as I’m facing him I’m pulled into a hug.

“Hey...” I sigh into his chest, even though I haven’t said even to Glen, I miss him. All the hugs and play fights, even the real fights and arguments.

“I’ve missed you!” I chime. He smiles from ear to ear, obviously happy that we’re back on good terms.

“I’ve missed you too! Oh and Evie, Glen’s depressed, go cheer him up will you!” he chuckles, patting me on the back before walking away to Danny.

Breathe...

I pat him on the back making him turn sharply around.  The relief and happiness on his face is amazing I never realized how much seeing him happy makes me happy before.

“Evie, god. I miss you!” he chuckles. I don’t speak, he’s in my arms in an instant.

“I missed you too. Are...are you sober?” I hesitate before asking, I don’t want the answer really. I just want to have a good time.

“I’ve had one.  We’re drinking together tonight. One last party before I’m back on the wagon!” he nods looking me right in the eye, the glint is back. Something makes me believe him, right as he passes me a shot...
