Chapter 39

White jumped as lightning cracked over head in the sky. She didn't want to be out during the upcoming storm, but they were so low on food that they had no choice but the venture into town. If they were successful, at least they would have enough food to last them awhile.

"The storm is two miles north of the town," counted Blue Moon as he sat next to the young girl. "We should be home before it passes."

White looked up to her other side to see Rapi. Her flaming mane was more fiery than usual. The Ponyta must have felt more uneasy because of Sky's lateness than the storm.

Despite the bakery's owner threat to toss Sky Blue in jail himself if he ever broke in again, they had run so low on food that they had no choice but to risk stealing food. Even though all of them disagreed with this course of action, they had reluctantly let Sky Blue go into the bakery and steal the food since he was the only one who knew the layout of the store.

Sky Blue had not been the same since Missy's death. He had been horribly depressed, and had stayed away from White to protect her from himself. White didn't tell a soul that Sky had struck her, for she knew it would just make everything so much worse for him. Everyone feared for him, for he would leave the grotto without telling anyone and come back hours later. One time Ray had to go find him after being gone almost a whole day. When he came back with Sky, he didn't say what had happened.

White felt her heart lighten slightly at the sound of the back door of the bakery opening. She looked around to see Sky Blue, Pichu, Chatter, and Junior standing in the threshold. They had two paper bags full of goods with them.

"We got as much as we could carry!" Sky Blue told White, Rapi, and Blue Moon as he quietly shut the door behind him. "Nobody was around!"

"Very well done, you four," Rapi started, looking in Sky Blue's bag and then seeing the one Chatter was flying with. "I suspect the owner will notice if something is gone, so we will stay away from here for awhile. It's getting dark, so let's hurry on our way."

The Ponyta relieved Sky of his paper bag and carried it by holding the handle between her teeth. Blue Moon joined in helping Pichu and Junior lift up the second one so Chatter had an easier time holding it up.

As White was about to trail after Rapi, she heard a quiet cough behind her. She looked around to see Sky Blue watching her shyly. She was confused on why he was blushing so much.

"Are you ok, Sky?" White asked him uncertainly. "You look a little...red."

"What?" Sky began before suddenly hurrying on, "Oh! Yeah, I'm fine, it's just..."

"What's wrong? Are you sure you aren't sick, because then you should talk to Rapi-"

"I'm not sick, honest! I-I just wanted to give you..."

He held out his arms and handed her what he was holding. The young boy had given her a pretty pink folded box with light yellow designs on it. Through the little plastic window on top White could see a big chocolate cupcake with twisted white frosting. It also had chocolate shreds scattered on top of the icing.

"It might be a little smushed, I put in my hood so I could get it out," Sky Blue explained, not looking at her. "White, I-I'm really sorry about what I did when Missy died...I don't know what came over me, but I-I seriously hurt you..."

Sky Blue stopped as White suddenly hugged him tightly and she told him reassuringly, "I'm just glad to have you back, Sky. I've missed you..."
