Prologue

Sammy's POV

I wanted to be out. I missed everything about the outside, my family, my other friends, and my babies, my best friends, my closest companions, my dogs. I tried to air lock one more time before falling to my knees in front of the door. I let out a cry and banged my fist on the door.

"I WANT OUT!"

My eyes grew wet and I felt a tear slide down my cheek. Ten years in this hell hole, stuck with four other people. We had supplies for one more year. No extra clothes, and two of us slept on the floor. With one more feeble pull to the handle, I slunk back down the stairs to curl in front of the radio.

Lucinda's POV

I paused from my reading to watch Sam desperately scroll through the radio, eyes soaking wet. I shook my head and refocused on the Harry Potter book in my hands. I read it a few hundred times already, but there was nothing else. The heaving sobs of Sam made me set it down and watch her more carefully. She did this every day, and this was not very different than the other times. Pulling at her hair, she threw herself onto the couch, her cries muffled. I sighed and pulled the book back onto my lap.

Justin's POV

My feet thundered on the treadmill, my heart pumping as I ran for my life, some good old Pink Floyd pumping into my head. The treadmill slowed as my set time to stop came up and then stopped completely. I took a huge glug from my water bottle and headed for the shower just as Alexander came out. He nodded to me, handing me a towel. "I used the last one, we need to do a wash." I too nodded, barely able to take a breath. I tossed the sweaty rag I used for my run on the floor in the bathroom, which was still steamy from Alex's shower.

Lizzy's POV

I too was paying attention to Sammy's cries. I thought they sounded more desperate than usual, but I couldn't tell. I didn't care. It became more than usual to hear them. I continued to carefully split up tonight's dinner rations. I was the oldest, and therefore I cooked for everyone and took care of anyone that got hurt. They treated me like a mother, and it made me proud. Gently scraping the carrots into everyone's dish but Justin's, I heard Lucinda come up to me, and when I looked up, I saw her Fairy Tail shirt hung loosely off her shoulders. I fixed it. She batted my hand away, grumbling a complaint. Handing her her dish, she took her seat at the table. Sammy had recovered and grabbed her dish too, sniffing a soft 'thank you' and giving me a tight hug.

Alexander's POV

I slid into the seat next to Justin, both of our hair still wet from our showers. He looked up for a split second before cramming his face more with food. Lucinda nodded at me, a soft, warming smile on her face. I couldn't help but notice how nice she looked. Her green eyes glinted with mischief and her shirt dangled off her shoulders at a perfectly revealing angle. Lizzy had also cleaned up, her grey blue eyes hopeful. Justin looked significantly less greasy after his shower, and his doe brown eyes gleamed with hunger. Sammy was the only one avoiding eye contact with anyone, her face looking only at the dish in front of her. Her eyes, even from my angle i could tell, were puffy and red, her hair a mess and her fingernails ripped down to the lowest point.

I couldn't help but feel like she was falling slower and slower into an abyss of anxiety and depression. Suddenly her face jerked forward into her plate, and the table started to shake. My chair broke and I hit the concrete floor hard. Justin was wobbling above me, stumbling about, one hand tight on his glasses, trying to reach for anyone. The lights flickered on and off, glasses and plates smashed the floor. And then it was over. Just like that. Lucinda stood up, rubbing her head.

    "The hell was that?"

Justin stared at her, taking off his glasses and cleaning them with his shirt.

    "An earthquake maybe?"

"What? Why? We never had one the whole ten years we were down here!"

"Well our luck seems to have run out."

    "That wasn't an earthquake."

    "Was to."

    "Shut up it isn't possible."

"Are you dumb, of course it is!"

Lucinda shook with anger, her fist balled up. Right before she was about to say more, Lizzy grabbed her hand. Lucinda looked up and Lizzy shook her head at her.

"Please stop arguing." She said softly, dropping her hand, which was relaxed now. I got up, my head hurting from the tremors and the screaming. That's when I realized what was missing.

"Where's Sammy?" I asked, rubbing my head. Everyone looked around before we all instantly ran for the air locked door.

    "Oh." Lucinda started.

    "My." Lizzy continued.

"God." Justin and I finished in unison.
