Lucinda's POV
The door was open. The door was open. My eyes grew bigger and my vision got fuzzy. You could hear a pin drop it was so silent in the room. Everyone just stated. Alexander had to grip the side of the wall to stand up and Justin was wobbling on his feet. Lizzy was the only one who showed no emotion besides calm. Finally she spoke, a wide grin parting on her face.
"Is this real?" She asked. Sammy came to the door, her eyes freshly wet and a smile bigger than Lizzy's, She stuffed her hands into her pocket, smiling at us.
"Are my glasses broken." Justin asked, his face deadpanned.
"No, I see it too." Alex whispered, his face a mix of emotions.
"That wasn't an earthquake." Sammy said. I was still staring at her, a confused look on my face and my heart pounding.
"What was it then?"
Sam scoffed, shaking her head towards the newly opened door. "What's it look like? It was a decade old piece of machinery opening our escape to freedom. We're finally gonna be out."
Justin's POV
My heart fluttered and my head felt light. We were... getting out. A dream we dreamed everyday for ten years. Alexander was the first to fling his arms around Sammy, and Lucinda quickly joined in. Lizzy and I were the last ones to wrap our arms around the trio and we all started to cry, even Alex. We survived. We all separated, and Lizzy waved us back.
"We should grab some things from the weapon room." I picked up Sammy and set her on my back, her face full of pure joy as she laughed, wrapping her legs around my side. I gripped her legs and we followed Lizzy down to the only unopened room in the bunker. I felt Sammy bury her head in my hair and a sigh escaped her. I set her down when we reached the door and produced a key from my pocket. Fixing my glasses again, I slipped the key into the keyhole and opened the door with a flourish. Inside we had a few runty guns, a crowbar, bat, and our proudest possession, the machete from Alexander's dad's collection. Lucinda's eyes lit up when she saw the machete and she picked it up, testing it out on the air, fighting some invisible enemy.
"This is DOPE." She exclaimed, running her finger up and down the dull side. Lizzy reached for the crowbar. Sammy grabbed a wicked knife and a shotgun. Alex, the bat and a pistol. I too reached for a pistol. It was really cool looking, it was decorated with colorful paints. I looked over at Lucinda, who blushed.
"You did this?"
She nodded. "Sam decorated Alex's." Alex looked up hearing his name and then back down at the colorful gun in his hands.
"Awesome!"
Sammy grinned her wide smile. We were tucking our weapons away when I noticed a sharp spear leaning in the corner all alone, another part of Alex's dad's weird collection. I reached for that and slipped it into the quiver we brought down but forgot the arrows and bow. I put it on my back and we all stood in front of the long mirror. Lizzy looked the most kick ass, she wore a determined expression and the crowbar was in the perfect position to bash someone's head in. Alex looked a bit wary, gripping his bat so hard his knuckles were white. His ripped t-shirt covered in old food stains that looked a bit like blood make him look a bit tougher. Lucinda's eyes shone with excitement, and she looked a little too pumped up to kill. She bounced slowly up and down, her machete shaking. Sammy looked pretty tense, but her eyes burned with a passion. Her knife was held at her side. I looked weak and defenseless, my skinny form and my wide frame glasses making me look like a nerd who's never touched a weapon in their life. I'd say that was a pretty accurate description of me.
Lizzy's POV
I felt like such a badass, sauntering up to the door that was now open, my frie... my family, following close behind. I heard Alex and Lucinda giggling about something and i felt the soft breath of Justin who walked right behind me. Sammy was right next to me, barely able to contain her excitement. We stomped up the stairs and were blinded by sunlight. Not natural sunlight, a hot, scorching sunlight that burned our skin.
"Ow! What the hell?" Alex asked confused, diverting his attention away from Lucinda.
"I think it's because we haven't seen real sunlight in years." Sammy said, probably not even convincing herself. Justin had ignored us and was already halfway up the ladder. His face was upturned to the sky, and he shook with excitement. Sammy was the next one on the ladder, and i followed close behind, still confused. Lucinda and Alex held back, their faces still pulled into a look of concern. Sammy gasped above me, and I refocused on her. She had reached the top and was leaning on Justin to make sure she didn't fall over.
"You guys, this is nothing how i imagined it to be." The curiosity overcame Alex and Lucinda and they climbed quickly up the ladder. When they reached the top, I slammed the door shut and locked it, shaking. I turned to stand next to Sammy, as did Alex and Lucinda, and we stared at the mess in front of us. Other bunkers around us began to slowly open, behind the shells of houses. Confused people stumbled out, clawing at their burning skin or marveling at the dusty landscape before them. A boy and his little sister came out of one next to us, and I recognized them as William and Jessie. Jess was around Sammy and Justin's age, about 15. William was closer to Lucinda and Alex's age of 17. I was the oldest at 19. Sammy recognized Will too and waved him over. He adjusted that silly cowboy hat and walked over, a half smile on his face.
"Hey Sam." He said in his creamy southern drawl. Jess waved to Justin, her cowboy hat missing. He averted his eyes. It was well known in our group that Jess had the biggest crush on Justin, who was a year older than her. Sammy waved back to Will, and then gave him a tight squeeze.
"You guys had a bunker?"
He opened his arms and grinned his sweet smile. "Crazy, right?"
Lucinda practically turned to butter when he faced her. "You look so different." She said, her eyes lost in his.
"We had a gym downstairs." He said, winking at her. Someone climbed out of their bunker, their arms full of things, and closed to door gently. Will turned around and smiled.
"Ay, y'all made it."
Sammy's POV
The boy I barely recognized as Carl whipped sweat off his brow and walked over to us, handing Jess and Will each a bag and a weapon. He must have bunked with them.
"Carl..." I started. "Where's Emily?" I asked, looking around for his five year old sister. He looked down, his eyes watering.
"My whole family didn't make it." He looked back up. "Neither did theirs." He jabbed a thumb in Will's direction. "Hey bud, we dont know that quite yet."
Carl looked up. "Yeah, we do." He shook his head, fixing his shirt that barely fit his newly ripped frame. "But its all cool, I have Will and Jess."
I smiled. "Now you have us too." He nodded.
"Unless you're in my head. Ive been having these weird hallucinations lately."
Justin's eyes lit up. "Try and hallucinate a hot girl, with nice br..." Justin was cut off when Lucinda slapped him. He held his hands up. "Ayy no need to be like that, I was just trying to lighten the mood."
"Dude, throw in a girl for me too." Alex said, grinning.
"Shut up dipwad." I said to him, shaking my head. He grinned wider.
"Ohh crybaby Sammy might hurt me." He fell into Lucinda. "Help me!" He threw his hand over his forehead over dramatically. Lucinda backed up and he fell into the dirt. "What the hell man!"
"Dont touch me." Lucinda said with a huff.
"Roasted." I muttered.  He reached his hand up, but nobody grabbed it. He let out an exasperated sigh and laid back down in the dirt. I stepped on him and faced the sky. "Today folks, we have discovered new land. We shall begin our new life here." Will let out a laugh and Lucinda grinned, giving me a thumbs up.
"He was trash talking you earlier." Justin let out a girly giggle and everyone stared at him. I slowly stepped off Alex and stared at him.
"What's so funny nerd boy."
"His laugh?" Alex asked, standing up and brushing himself off. Even I had to laugh at that one. Justin giggled a bit more nervously, pushing up his glassed yet again.
Jess gave me the death stare. "Leave Justin out of it."
Carl grinned. "Three hot beach babes coming right up." That landed him a punch from Lucinda. "Ok there feminist, I think we're getting a bit off track." He gasped, grinning like a fool. She backed off to stand next to me.
"Boys are disgusting."
I turned and burped in her face. She stared at me and then walked off with nothing more than a look of disgust. Lizzy and Will had been quietly watching this freak show and finally stepped in.
"Let's go to town." Lizzy said, Will backing her up.
"That's the neighborhood meeting place. If anyone of importance is alive, that's where they'll be." He added, pulling Jess over. We all sighed and nodded, agreeing that it was the logical choice.
"Walk in partners at all times, I don't want to know what kind of things or people will be waiting for us." Lizzy said sternly.
Will and Jess, Alex and Lucinda, Carl and Lizzy, and me and Justin. I couldn't complain, I was quite fond of Justin, we've grown very close. He pointed to him back.
"Towns only a few minutes away. If you carry my pack, I'll give you a ride." I grinned, punching his arm lightly.
"Fine, if you insist." I laced up my Timbs and grabbed his bag, chucking it at Lizzy. "Carry this."
Justin let out a sigh and crouched down. I got on his back and he stood up. Alex saw this and turned towards Lucinda. Mocking Justin he pointed to his back too.
"I'll carry you babe." He said in a high pitch voice. She glared at him and shook her head. No matter how close the two were, she still wouldn't let him so much as touch her. He dropped his goofy grin and we started walking.
Alexander's POV
I desperately tried to find some way to talk to Lucinda. Knowing the girl for thirteen years seemed to do jack for me, as I could never say so much as an offensive joke to her without her getting pissed. Every time I got in one of my petty fights with Sam, she always backed her up, and everytime i tried to hug her or hold her hand or touch her shoulder she would slink away from me. We still talked, but my jokes had to be strictly PG. I just wanted to crack her shell. We joked as we walked, and she would occasionally give me that beautiful smile of hers, but mostly it was just silence, us listening to Justin making jokes about Sammy's weight or Will doing funny impersonations of people. I tried to take her hand once, but Lucinda just slapped it away. Ten minutes of total awkwardness later, we reached the town. Lucinda touched me for maybe the first time in a week, her hand gripping my shoulder. The town was a mess of undead... things. They were pulling entrails out of the living and cramming it into their mouths, guts falling out of their gaping mouths like spaghetti. Lucinda leaned on me more, and i heard her stomach twisting and turning. The things ran away when people on top of the huge wall surrounding the town shot at them. They darted past us, not even giving us a glance. Sammy's face was twisted into a look of disgust as well, and she jumped off Justin's back to watch them race down the road. "Radiated." Lizzy muttered, her crowbar at the ready. "They're radiated."
Lucinda dropped her hand and shook her head, averting her eyes from the wreck in front of us. Two heavily armed guards dropped down from the wall to stand in front of the entrance.
"You guys ok?" One of them called. Lizzy pushed us forward, and nodded a yes. When we were closer, she gave them a look.
"What were those things?"
He shrugged. "Zombies I guess. Welcome to the wonderful world of the wasteland."
Sammy snorted. "Say that ten times fast."
Lucinda eyed the guards. "Welcome? Wonderful?"
He nodded, grinning. "I'm assuming you're staying, since there's no other place for miles."
