Lucinda's POV
I turned around slowly, the voice still echoing in my head. Someone was coming out from behind one of the shacks, and two other people were coming from the dining room. Two girls and a boy.
"Who are you?" Lizzy asked, gripping the sawed off shotgun she claimed in her hand. One of the girls, the older one, quickly pulled a double barrel shotgun out of its sling on her back. "I wouldn't aim that at me if i were you." Lizzy scoffed. "Its nine of us and three of you. We don't want any trouble, but we do have the upper hand. Now why don't you answer my question. Who are you."
I studied the three. The taller, older one had a bandana tied around her head and long, straight, brown hair. It was hard to make out her face, but she was hella pale and had freckles. She wore a no sleeve tshirt over jeans shorts, accompanied with knee high boots. She looked like she could beat up anyone. The younger girl standing behind her looked about Sammy's age. She had medium length blonde hair and looked terrified. She wore nothing special, just a plain black tshirt and blue jeans, along with work boots. She had a pistol, but looked like she had no intention of using it. The boy that came from behind the shack was tall and had a large build. He, like the other two, was extremely pale, with light brown hair. He wore khakis and a jean jacket over a gray t shirt, along with a beaten up pair of sneakers.
"Its none of your concern. However, it is our concern that you're in our territory." Bandana said, eyeing us. "How do we know you aren't turning as we speak?"
Pistol looked like she was about to cry. "Colby..."
She tugged on Bandana's arm. 'Colby' looked down at Pistol. "Sis not now." She said, shaking her head. "We don't have time for your nice guy act."
Pistol ignored her sister and started walking to us. "My name's Autumn. My sister is Colby and her boyfriend over there is Daniel." She stuck her hand out to me and i took it.
"Lucinda." I said quietly.
Lizzy raised an eyebrow at Autumn. "Why are you guys up here?"
Autumn smiled. "We needed food so we figured we'd set up camp here. After this part of the underground went to crap, it was everyone for themselves." She waved to Lizzy. "What's your name?"
"Lizzy." she replied.
I glanced over to Colby, who was fidgeting with her gun.
"Well Lizzy, we need first aid help. Do you think you could help us?"
Evan put a hand on Lizzys arm and shook his head.
Alex came up next to me. "Do you trust them?" He asked me. I shrugged.
"Fine. We'll help you." Lizzy said.
Evan dropped his hand to his side. "Lizzy no."
She whirled on him. "Lizzy yes." She glanced at Alex and I. "You two go get Dean. Take fire boy with you if you want."
Alex nodded. "Come on Luc." He said quietly.
Justin's POV
The sound of the elevator opening caused me to look up. I wrapped my hand around my pistol and stood up. Dean stood up too, before falling back down. Something on his hand caught my eye, but someone screaming my name caused me to look away.
"Lucinda?" I called. She came sprinting around the corner so fast, she was just a blur.
"We need Dean upstairs." She said, breathing heavily.
"What? Why."
"I don't know. Some people upstairs are like, threatening our lives."
"WHAT?!" My heart started racing.
"They need first aid. I can only pray its something Dean can..." She was looking at Dean's hand. "What is that?"
Dean quickly put his hand in his pocket.
"Dean?" Alex walked over to him. "What was on your hand?"
Dean shook his head vigorously.
"Dean show us." I said, curious myself.
He slowly took his hand out and showed us the back of his hand. It was very clearly a bite mark.
"Dean oh my God." Lucinda started to freak out. She crouched down next to him and took his hand in hers. "Can you can heal it?" She asked frantically.
Dean placed his hand on his other hand and let it linger for a few seconds. When he took it away, it was still there. I heard the elevator ding again.
"Crap. We need to get back up." Alex walked over to the elevator just as Sammy came out.
She almost ran into him. "Guys Colby is not happy. Get Dean up there now!"
I heard a sniff and turned back to Lucinda and Dean. Dean was crying.
"Oh Dean." Lucinda squeezed his hand. A gunshot echoed throught the room.
"Lets get Dean upstairs." Sammy walked over to Dean and helped him stand up. "Why are you crying?" Sammy asked, pulling him into a hug.
"He got bit." Lucinda said, standing up. "Come on."
She zipped off, and the elevator opened again. Alex rushed for the elevator, and i followed him. Sammy and Dean squeezed in and Lucinda slammed her hand on the up button. A few seconds later, the elevator opened again and Lucinda sprinted out. I ran after Sammy and Dean, Alex in the back. We reached the small group and was greeted by a bloody Will, laying on the floor.
"What the hell?" Sammy screamed. She held Dean back. "Why'd you shoot him?"
Will was shot in the leg, and each second that ticked away was killing him. Dean dropped to the floor and placed his hand on the wound. A minute later he took it off and it was healed.
"Colby!" Autumn breathed. "This guy can heal our mom!"
Her eyes lit up and she reached for Dean, helping him up. Colby looked shocked, and she let her gun fall to her side.
"What the hell?"
"Justin and Sammy, go with Dean." Lizzy said, gesturing for us to follow them to the far hut.
I broke out in a jog, following them. Autumn slipped a key into the lock and swung the door open. A middle aged man and a woman were on the floor, sitting side by side.
Autumn slid down next to the woman. "Mama we found someone that can help you."
I studied the woman. She was pale with dark circles under her eyes. She wore only a sports bra, which i assumed was because of the gauze wrapped around her chest. Autumn leaned down and took off the bandages. The was a huge bullet wound in her side. The woman groaned.
"Dean? Was that your name? Can you heal her?"
Dean nodded and leaned down, placing his hand on the woman's wound. He sat there for about a minute and then stood up. Her skin was smooth.
The man let out a surprised gurgle and stood up quickly. "How did you..."
Dean smiled. Sammy opened her mouth to say something when she was interrupted by someone yelling. Autumn rushed out of the hut and we followed her.
"The healer is infected!" Colby screamed, angrily marching for us, her gun aimed at Dean's head.
Sammy's POV
"No!" I stood in front of Dean, shaking my head. "Don't touch him."
Colby chuckled. "I don't think you have say in this sweetie." She put her finger on the trigger. "Now move or I'll shoot you too."
I heard Dean whimpering behind me and my heart shattered.
"Fine. Shoot me." I crossed my arms and stared her down.
She hesitated. "Seriously. Move."
I didn't.
Quinn walked between us, his hands shaking. "You aren't hurting my brother. There's gotta be another way."
Colby took her finger of the trigger. "Then what do you propose we do?" She asked.
"We cut off his hand."
Dean let out a strangled noise.
"Justin we aren't cutting off his hand." Lizzy said, glaring at him.
"Why not? We need to act fast, because I'm sure it's spread. But I still think we can stop it from reaching his brain if we cut off the source." Dean was shaking. "Quinn does it. His flame with cauterize the wound and it won't hurt." I stared at Justin, not quite understanding.
"Yes! Colby let them do it." Autumn said.
Colby let out a sigh. "Fine. But I'll be ready to put a bullet in his head the minute he acts out."
We walked over to one of the huts and Dean sat down on a sleeping bag.
Quinn was shaking badly. "I can't do this." He muttered.
"Its his hand or his life." I said quietly.
We left them be, Lizzy watching over them. Autumn rushed up to me and gave me a hug.
"Thank you so much! Without Dean my mom would've died."
I patted her awkwardly on the back. "Go ahead and chill in one of the huts. Colby's grabbing waters with Daniel."
I gave her a salute and headed for the nearest hut. Justin and Alex were inside cleaning their guns. With a sigh i flopped down on the ground.
"Well at least they didn't shoot on sight." Alex said, looking up to smile at me.
"Kinda wish they did." I said.
"So what's the deal with you two?" Alex said, putting his gun down.
"Me and Justin?" He nodded.
Justin looked up. "Hmm?"
"Are you two thing or..."
I buried my head in my hands. "Really Alex? Right now?"
Justin let out a nervous giggle. "Us? Haha nothing's going on." He said.
I lifted my head to stare at him. "You have got to be kidding me."
"So you two aren't friends anymore?" Alex asked, staring at me.
"God I don't know!" I said sharply. "I think I have more important things to worry about."
I looked over at Justin and he was looking down, refusing to meet my gaze. Crap. I hurt him. "I mean... like I obviously... ah." I stopped talking and put my head back down. Someone knocked on the side of the hut.
"Food's ready if y'all want some." Lizzy.
"We're coming." I stood up and brushed off my pants, leaving without another word to either Alex or Justin. Quinn was coming out of the hut we put him and Dean in. I raced over to him. "What happened? Is he okay?" I asked frantically.
What if he lost too much blood? What if Quinn wasn't precise enough? What if it was too late?
Quinn gave me a nod and a strained smile. "Never thought I'd see the day where I cut my brother's hand off."
I nodded and we headed for Lizzy and the rest of the group. Someone had laid out blankets and food out on the floor.
"Dean will join us when he's ready." Quinn whispered, sitting down.
I nodded. We ate a small meal of fresh pork and vegetables for... I don't know if it was breakfast or lunch. Its hard to tell time when you're underground.
"So why don't you explain to us why some of your group has powers?" Colby said, taking a bite of her pork.
"We honestly don't know." Lizzy said, not touching her food. "They just got it."
"We think it's because of the radiation." Justin offered.
"You guys have been above ground?" Daniel asked curiously.
"Its chaos up there." I muttered.
"We're heading for Canada. They're working on a cure for the radiation."
Colby scoffed, playing with her gun. "Y'all are telling me you wouldn't want to keep the powers?" Justin stared at her as if she was stupid. "Are you nuts? We don't know what kind of side effects radiation might have on us. Plus," he gestured towards Evan. "there's people that want us dead."
I finished my food and stood up.
"Liz I'm going to go grab our bags from downstairs. I think it's a safe bet that it's better up here."
Lizzy gave me a nod. "Anyone want to come with?" I asked, opening up my arms. Justin and Autumn stood up.
"Yeah I'll go." Justin muttered. The three of us headed for the elevator. I hit the button and we got in. The silence was driving me nuts. The elevator dinged and we got out. We all grab four to five bags and loaded them on the elevator. Autumn got in and brought them back up. I slumped into a chair, and Justin sat down next to me.
"Listen." I looked up at Justin. "I'm sorry. I don't know what the hell I was thinking. I love you like a sister and..."
He stopped talking and pushed his glasses up. I studied his face. He had let his hair fall into his face and it was hard to see his eyes. Like an emo nerd. I chuckled at my own joke and Justin gave me a side look.
"What?"
I shook my head. "Nothing."
The elevator made its sound again and Autumn rounded the corner. We helped her put the rest in the elevator and waited for it to return.
"For the record Justin, I don't hate you." I looked up at him. "Wrong place, wrong time."
He nodded, blushing. I slipped my hand into his.
"Who knows," I muttered. "There maybe a right place and a right time."
He grinned. "Maybe."
I brushed the hair out of his face. The elevator's doors slid open and we hopped in. I wrapped my hand around Justin's. He glanced at me but didn't say anything.
"I changed my mind." I muttered, swinging his hand back and forth.
"About what?"
"I preferred being underground."
He let out a laugh and I grinned up at him. "Make up your mind girl."
I studied his eyes. "I changed my mind about something else." I said softly, as the doors opened.
"Dear God. What now?" He asked. I glanced down the hallway. The doors were still closed.
"This." I leaned up and pressed my lips to his. It was a soft kiss, and it sent a tingle up my spine. I placed my hands on his cheeks and held it for a few seconds. We broke apart and Justin stared at me.
"Right place right time?" He asked quietly.
"Yeah."
Alexander's POV
Autumn handed me the last bag with a blush.
"Here's the last one." She said softly.
"Thanks ma'am."
She scampered off. Quinn walked up to me and gave me a nudge.
"She has a crush on you man." He said, watching her disappear into the hut her mom was in.
"She's adorable." I said, walking over to the hut i picked to sleep in and chucked the bag into it.
"Who you staying with?" Quinn asked with a motion towards the hut.
"Lucinda." I said with a grin.
"Reaaallly." He murmured. I nudged him. He let out a chuckle and walked away shaking his head. Someone called my name and I whipped around just in time to get a crushing hug from Sammy.
"Hey! Sam!" I said, patting her back.
"I love life!" She said, backing away from me and twirling around. Justin came up behind her, a huge dopey smile on his face. She let out a squeaking noise and threw her arms around Justin's neck. I shook my head with a grin and headed for Evan's hut. I knocked on the side.
"Evan?"
He poked his head out. "Yo?"
"Just wondering when we were leaving." I said.
"Ah probably after everyone gets a good rest. The next rest stop isnt too far away though."
I gave him a nod and he slipped back in. I heard footsteps behind me and someone put their hand on my shoulder.
"Whats up?" Lucinda.
I turned to face her. "We're taking a nap and then leaving."
She pouted. "That quickly, huh?"
I nodded my head. "Sadly."
She laughed one of her beautiful laughs.
"I see the way Autumn looks at you." She said quietly.
"Oh? Yeah her. She's cute but if you ask me..." I bent down. "I think she and Dean will be a thing soon." I stood up with a wink.
"You've changed Alex." Lucinda said, as we started headed for the hut.
I smiled at her. "I have?"
She grinned at me and gave me a nudge. "Yes you have. You're more laid back and sweet."
I shrugged, grinning wider. "Guess the whole "apocalypse" thing does that to you."
I opened the door and held it open. Right before she stepped in, I ducked in and slammed the door shut behind.
"Oh for Christs sake. Alex!" She hit the door. "Let me in."
I opened it slightly. "What's the password?"
She rolled her eyes. "Alex is a butt."
I shook my head. "Its 'Alex is an ass'. You can't come in."
She gave me puppy dog eyes.
"Oh fineeee." I opened the door and let her in. She leaned down and picked up her book.
"Try to sleep at least Alex." She said with a smile, and then put in her headphones.
I sat down on my sleeping bag and i too put in my earbuds, before slipping out of my pants.
"I forgot you sleep with just your underwear on." Lucinda grumbled. I grinned and gave her a thumbs up, and then slid into my sleeping bag. I switched my music over to something more comforting. 'Hey You' by Pink Floyd. That'll do. With a sigh i closed my eyes.
'Alex come get a drink!' My father's voice rang out, echoing in my ears and chilling me down to my bones. 'I don't want any!' I cried, covering my head with a pillow. I heard my door slam open. 'Yes you do!' I let out a scream and backed up. My dad was drunk again. 'Daddy no!' I started to cry then. My dad let out a lunatic laugh. He scream the f word at me and threw the bottle. It shattered over my head. 'DADDY PLEASE!' I heard thumping on the stairs. 'Chandler!' My mom. 'You need to lay off the drugs and alcohol!' She came into my room and saw me. 'Oh my GOD! Leave Alexander alone.' She threw a punch at my dad, giving him a bloody nose. He pushed her down. "Go to our room.' He grinned his sick, drunken smile.
I woke up, sweating.
"Alex?" I looked up into Lizzy's eyes.
"Oh hey." I said with a shaky grin.
"We're leaving." She stuck her hand out. "I think you had a bad dream."
I chuckled, taking her hand. "You don't even know the half of it."
"Well I do know you need to put pants on." She said, gesturing to my crotch.
"Yeah. Right. Ok. Will do." I said, reaching for them.
"See you in half an hour." She said over her shoulder, before leaving. Lucinda laughed, putting her things in her bag.
"Nice underwear."
I looked down. Van Halen.
"Yeah thanks." I reached for my phone and slipped it into my pocket. "All set?" I asked her, putting on my pants.
"Yup."
I offered my hand. "M'lady."
She laughed and took it. I yanked her up. She slipped on her bag and i put on mine. We left the hut. Dean and Autumn were packing up some fresh vegetables.
"Ay big man!" I called. Dean looked up. "Lets see the hand." I said, walking over to him.
He held out his hand sheepishly. Lucinda let out a gasp. It was... well... a stub. I wasn't really expecting anything more or less. Clean cut, didn't look bloody or anything.
"That looks sick." I said with an approving nod. He looked up at me and grinned.
"Alright gang!" I looked over at Lizzy and Evan. "Off we go!"
Lizzy's POV
"Once again," I said as we headed for the elevator. "Groups of two to three, try to watch each other's back."
Autumn was following us.
"A get back here." Colby called.
She glanced back at them. "But..." She looked back at us. "I want to go to Canada."
Colby shook her head. "Autumn please."
Autumn looked down. "Its okay sister. I'll find you again." Colby's eyes started to water. She walked over to me and gripped my arm.
"Take care of her."
I nodded. She leaned down and gave her sister a hug. "Take care of yourself." Autumn buried her head in Colby's chest. Colby backed up and gave us a salute. "Y'all aren't all that bad." I ushered the first group into the elevator and got in with them.
"See you on the other side." I said to Evan. He gave me a smile and the doors shut."UGHHHH."
"Sammy you need to stop." Alex said.
"Are we there yet?"
"Are you done talking yet?" Lucinda asked.
"We're not too far away from the next community gathering area." Evan assured her, adjusting his bag. She let out a sigh and went back to walking next to Justin. Evan sidled up next to me.
"If I ever acted out at you I'm sorry." He muttered.
I smiled at him. "Its fine. Happens to the best of us."
I slipped my hand into his.
"We're coming up at the next stop." He said, pointing ahead of us with his head.
I looked up. People were milling around, and it was significantly more full of life than the other stop.
"This is underneath the city." He explained. We came up to a market place.
"Aw sick!" Justin said, racing for a table labeled 'technology'. Sammy followed him.
"Lucinda look!" Alex pointed. "FOOD!"
He raced for that table, and Lucinda followed him with a sigh. The rest of our group dispersed.
"This is amazing." I said, looking at all the stands and tables.
"They adapted." Evan said with a smile.
"This is like a book or a video game."
He nodded, dropping my hand. "We've already wasted enough time. Let's make sure we don't spend too long here." He produced a few dollar bills from his pocket. "Its all I kept. I think they use regular money down here." He handed them to me. "Get something. Something useful."
I nodded. "Will do."Fifteen minutes later, we regrouped. Elana had bought another blouse. Justin a new cord for his laptop, and Alex some sort of beef jerky stick. I didn't even want to know how they paid. I had picked up a new flashlight and some batteries, because that's all I could afford.
"Well let's keep moving." Evan said, ushering us on. "Has anyone seen Sammy?"
"She was next to me the last time I saw her." Justin said.
"Are y'all blind? I'm literally right here!"
I looked next to Justin. "Can you throw your voice or something?"
"What? No! Look I'm waving."
I couldn't see anything. "Sam you're not there."
Alex's dream is in bold because it wouldn't let me highlight the section and make it italicized. And I'm too lazy to rewrite it.
Also, this is a really long part I'm tired, please help.
