Sammy's POV
We awoke to the sound of sirens. Sirens.
"Lizzy!" I shrieked, calling for her. The lights turned on. It was still dark outside.
"Sammy I'm right here." She came over to me, hugging me. I buried my head in her shoulder. "Shh." She whispered. "Come on. Grab your gun."
She let go of me and i reached for my pillow. Pulling out my gun, I checked the chamber to see if it had ammo. Feeling satisfied with the amount, I slid it closed and turned off the safety. Lucinda was next to her bed, looking under it for her machete.
"Lucinda come on!" The sirens were still blaring. She finally found it and we raced for the door. Carl's door and Justin's door hung open. I banged on the den door. Quinn flung the door open, his hands eliminated in a blue light. "Quinn no."
"Why? I need to defend myself." I reached for my knife I tucked into my pocket and he took it. "Fine." He turned back into room. "Dean come on." I could make out Dean shaking his head, motioning to himself.
"He's a healer. Quinn he needs to stay."
"No! Dean come on!" He tried to go for him but I held him back.
"Please Quinn." I begged. He gave up and we turned to walk out. I turned to look at Dean. "Stay safe." I mouthed. He nodded. We rushed for the stairs just as Will's door opened.
"Jess Will let's go!" Lizzy called from the bottom of the stairs. We all gathered in the living room, the sirens ringing in our ears. Elana was downstairs too.
Carl gathered her in his arms. "El. You need to stay upstairs."
"No." She said shakily.
"Elana." I said softly.
"I want to fight."
"Alex will stay to keep you company." I said, patting his shoulder.
"I will?"
I nodded. "You will. We can't risk you getting in trouble." He nodded.
"Ok guys let's go see whats happening." Lizzy motioned us outside and we followed her. Lucinda and Quinn looked tense, their eyes darting back and forth. Lizzy and Will had their shoulders back and heads high, ready to kick some ass. The rest of us just looked bored, like we wanted it over.
An officer met us outside. "Some people turned and made a run for it." He explained. "And some kid that can levitate rocks has block themselves in their house with their family." I was taken aback by how he just kinda told us. They weren't trying to keep it a secret. "Damn." Will muttered.
"I know. Damn is right." The guard said. "I was told to bring your house to a bunker.
"Bunker?" I squeaked.
"I'm sorry, i know its hard. Most of this town lived in a bunker before this."
"And there's gonna be more people?" Lizzy asked.
He shook his head. "Nope. The bunker they assigned me and Jeff is pretty small. You guys should be comfortable in there. It'll only be a month or two."
I was shaking. A month or two. The guard hefted the large gun up, and through his visor i could tell he was much younger then he seemed at first. No more than twenty.
"Come on."
"Wait!" I cried grabbing his arm.
"We have three more inside."
He swore. "Ok ok go grab them." I rushed back into the house. Alex and Elana were sitting on the couch, and Dean was reading in the kitchen.
"Guys come on. We have to go." I felt something slide down my cheek. A tear. They followed me without a word. The guard noticed Elana immediately.
"Oh my God." He muttered. I turn my eyes to him, silently pleading.
"Guys we need to move out." Another guard came up to us. He seemed a bit older than guard number one, but still young.
"Jeff." Guard number one said. "They have the girl." He pointed to Elana who looked terrified. Jeff didn't skip a beat.
"I don't care we need to go." He left, racing for the road.
"I..." Guard number one stammered.
"You heard the man." Lizzy shouted. "Go!"
We raced after Jeff, the guard extremely confused. We reached a hatch and all the memories came back.
Justin came up behind me and touched my back gently. "Sammy. Will you be ok?"
I furiously wiped away a tear. "Duh." I said, my voice catching.
"Everyone down!" Jeff opened the hatch and waved us down. We descended one by one.
"JEFF!" We heard someone above us screech his name. "Hurry up! They're coming!"
Jeff's eyes grew wide and practically shoved the other guard down before jumping in himself and slamming the door. We were back in a bunker.
Lizzy's POV
"Are you okay?" Someone sat down next to me. I lifted my head to see the guard that brought us in looking at me concerned. His armor and visor was gone, replaced by a cowboy hat and a plain light blue tshirt, tucked into his jeans. He had the shadows of a beard on his face.
"Yeah. Yeah I'm fine. Overwhelmed, but fine." He nodded. "Whats with the cowboy hat?"
"I was a farmer. You know. Before everything." He blushed. "Not even a farmer. I was ten. Farmer's son."
I grinned. "I seem to know a lot of so called 'farmers'." He returned the smile.
"I can tell."
"Oh. My name's Evan."
"Lizzy." I held out my hand.
He shook it. "So about Elana." His face grew red again. He didnt seem to have a lot of confidence.
"Yeah, what about her?" I asked, growing serious. "You can't have her."
"I know. She must mean a lot to you guys to have her in your house. She's wanted badly by the governor."
I snorted at the name. "Oh?"
"Yeah. Listen i won't tell anyone, but no promises about Jeff."
I nodded. "Whatever. He tells anyone we aren't giving her up without a fight."
He smiled. "Good for you. Why don't we get started on breakfast. I presume all of you are pretty hungry."
I held up my hand. "Wait for it."
He cocked his head at me. "Excu-"
"I'm making breakfast what do you nerds have in this kitchen." Sammy walked in, a shotgun slung over her back.
"She's a swimmer. She needs food. Or that's her excuse at least." I winked at Evan.
Alex came skipping, yes skipping, in. "Gimme food."
"Please." I added. "Gimme food, please."
He gave me a salute.
"Ooo pancake mix." Sammy said happily, pulling down a box.
"Pancakes?" I heard a distant voice.
"Pancakes!" Sammy confirmed. Lucinda came sliding in, her hair wet from a shower. She wore short shorts and a long sleeve tshirt, adorned by long ass socks.
"Thats a look." I muttered.
"HI MOM!" She shouted.
"Yeah go help Sammy make things." I rubbed my head. Evan gave me a smile.
"They've adjusted quickly."
If only he knew.
