EXILE: Chapter 2

I woke up with a start, gasping air into my lungs. My eyes flew open in panic and I sat up in alarm. My mother! She knew my parents were here! Somewhere.. somewhere.. somewhere.

I heard a crash as the Spellweaver taking care of me rushed to my bedside. Her gentle face was flushed with concern as she appeared beside me. Her eyes crinkled slightly as she examined me. I suddenly felt a hand tighten on my wrist, and I looked over to see Gotare stirring from his land of dreams. His fierce amber eyes blinked open as he reluctantly returned to reality.

A pinch on my arm made me flick my wolf eyes back to the Spellweaver. I watched as she plucked a needle from my arm. She hummed to herself as she floated across the room, carrying the needle delicately. Her white gown blended in with the whitewashed walls of the room. Everything was white. The floor, the roof, the furniture, the charts, the lights, everything. Not even the shadows seemed to be able to dampen the sterile mood of the cramped alcove. The only colour in the room was that of the Spellweaver's cherry hair.

"Hey.." Gotare said looking up at me. I looked at his face. Hiding his amber eye, his black hair fell annoyingly across the left side of his face. His strong set jaw was relaxed into a casual smile, his eyes dancing.

"Hey," I replied, returning the smile. "What time is it? I feel like I've been asleep for ages."

"It's only three hours after sunrise," he replied, "Once you get released from here, Kendo will take you to your chambers. He should be here soon," Gotare motioned to the doorway.

As if on cue, Kendo promptly entered through the door and hustled over to Spellweaver, with whom he exchanged some quick words with. Then he turned his attention to me. Once again, he had adorned brightly coloured and heavily decorated clothes. A moment of silence filled the air as he studied me quickly, his gaze lingering on the wrap around my head.

"Feeling any better?" he inquired with concern.

I threw a quick glance at Gotare, who nodded slightly. "A bit... Everything's still foggy, though. I don't remember much, like you unfortunately. And I don't know where I am..." I responded, acting confused. I knew I had to pretend to know nothing in order for Gotare and my ruse to work.

"Oh. Well then I shall show you around a bit when we go to your chambers. You can get cleaned up, if you'd like, before you start your retraining. Nico, you'll be staying with Trefitha for the time being to make sure she's alright. Good? Alright then, let's get going."

"Wait, wait, wait!" I called after the noble before he could leave the room in his billowing robes. "Retraining? What for? Fighting is one thing I remember, the same with defending. Those I'd never forget."

"Retraining for the Exilation, of course! You really don't remember much, then, do you? The two prisoners the Queen ordered to be captured are being exiled to the Black Mountains for a high treason charges and for refraining information demanded by the Queen. She's had them held captive for many years, yet she has gained no information from them. At least, none that she doesn't already know. The Queen has grown frustrated with them, so she decided it's time for them to be exiled. It's all happening in less than a weeks time," Kendo explained, "The Queen herself will be arriving in a few days, and everything must be perfect. Therefore you must start your retraining as soon as is possible. So if your ready, we can leave now," He gestured towards the door.
