EXILE: Chapter 6
Smoke filled air surrounded me. It sucked up into my lungs, threatening to choke me. Crackling blazes pierced the air with its cursed screams. My skin was getting scorched from the heat. Burning tears crept down my face as ash assaulted my eyes. There was no escape. The fire held no gaps.
The fire was overbearing to my acute senses. Burning wood made the sound of festival fireworks. The outburst of flames glared like the midday sun. Continually, the airborne soot stung my nose with it's horrendous ashy claws. The fiery, torrid logs bit against my tender skin. Amid the buffeting inferno, fallen beams and smouldering embers was all there was to see. Despite my futile efforts to stay in control, the overwhelming fire sent me rapidly into a confused state. It kept closing in around me and I had no place to go.
My little feet shuffled forward cautiously. I searched around in despair, but only to see what I had already seen. I cried out desperately for my parents, but no sound managed to leave my lips. I knew I was screaming, but I couldn't hear a thing besides the bonfire which was my house. I stepped forward again, and felt the wood breaking beneath me. I silently screamed another time.
Numerous booming footsteps crashed below where I was standing. I whimpered as the smoke encircled me with its reaching tendrils. A loud cracking sound drew my attention upwards to the ceiling. I yelped and jumped backwards as the roof caved in. An immense beam crashed down where I once was. Sunlight briefly streamed in. All too soon, the smoke found the opening and blotted out the sun.
I coughed weakly, forcing a little of the smoke out of my lungs, only to have more smoke fill them. I scuttled my body backwards as a dark figure suddenly appeared in the shadows. Looming out of the smoke, my father's tall and broad body reached down towards me. My childish hands enclosed around his neck. He rushed me through the house, avoiding the soldiers that were chasing him. More smoke filled my lungs, making me dizzy and sick. I dug my tiny face into his muscular neck.
Light. Bright light. I lifted my head to see that we were moving swiftly away from the house and towards the forest. Flames burst out of the roof of my house. The whole place was ablaze and there was nothing to stop it. Without warning, the whole building collapsed in on itself.
My father abruptly stopped and placed me on the ground. My mother ran across the snow to us. Together, they leaned down to my tear and ash splashed face. After hugging me and kissing me upon the brow, they pushed me towards the woods. Loud clashing and clanking sounded behind them. My father checked over his shoulder. Then hastily, pushed me towards the forest with more force.
"I love you, my child," my mother gasped, tears falling down her face. I looked up at her with a pleading stare.
My father examined me with a determined look on his face. "Run.." he whispered. I looked at him, confused. "Run!" he said, shouting this time. He pushed me towards the forest once more, and together my parents turned and ran from where I was. Rounding the edge of the burning rubble, I saw a large troop of guards chase after my parents. One of the soldiers pivoted slightly and saw me. I could feel him glaring at me as he started after me. I gasped, and sprinted into the woods. I ran as quickly as my little legs would permit.
