" May you pass the mashed potatoes please?" I asked in my best manners.
One thing I hate about having guest over is that I have to be on my absolute best behavior, even though they have seen me at my worst, but I didn't mention that to my mom.
I realized that even though my mom didn't give birth to me she was still my mom. And my dad. He's just like a father to me and been there my whole life so I can't think of him any differently.
Caleb's mom passed me the mashed potatoes and after I put some on my plate, I set the bowl down.
" So Mrs. Morris, what do you do for a living?" My mom asked, politely.
Caleb's mom finished chewing and smiled.
" Oh I work in a office, filing papers and taking phone calls." she said.
We continued eating and then my dad asked Mr.Morris the same question.
" I am a real-estate agent." he said.
My dad nodded in approvable.
It seemed like forever until dinner ended.
The adults talked while Caleb and I just looked at each other across the table, rolling our eyes every now and then.
Caleb and Kenya, can you two do the dishes?" My mom asked, but in the tone she was using I knew it wasn't an option.
" Yes ma'am." Caleb said, getting up.
I got up too and started taking the trays from his parents and my own while Caleb got my parents plate and his own.
We walked to the kitchen and as he cleaned off the dishes he passed them to me and I cleaned them.
We didn't talk but I liked the silence, plus I could hear if my parents were saying anything embarrassing, which they weren't.
I assed him a plate to dry and put away. After cleaning the dishes for a couple minutes, Caleb broke the silence.
" Have you ever thought about you and me." he asked.
" What do you mean?" I asked, passing him a plate.
I turned off the water even though I still had two plates to go and faced him.
" Like our future. Together." he said with a serious tone.
Honestly I have but I didn't want to tell him that.
" No. I mean I think of us right now in the moment and memories but not the future." I lied.
I saw hurt flash in his eyes but as quick as it was there it disappeared.
" Well I've thought about it." he said.
I nodded waiting for him to go on.
" I've thought of me marrying you. You being my one and only. And us going off and living in a house having kids run around. Our kids. And us being old, cranky and yelling at each other, helping put dentures in each other mouths.
I laughed and he touched the part of my nose that crinkles.
He came closer to me and leaned his body against mine, putting his hands on either side of me so I couldn't move.
I could feel his heart pounding through his chest.
" What do you think?" he asked.
I looked into his perfect grey eyes and this time there were more green flecks than brown.
" I like the idea." I said slowly.
" So if I pulled out a ring and got down on one knee you would say yes?" he asked.
My heart skipped a beat.
" I'm- I'm not sure. I mean we both just got out of high school and I'm going off to college" I stammered.
College. I've forgotten all about it. I need to study! I've been so distracted and I can't go into college knowing nothing.
" Kenya. Relax. I'm not proposing right now. Breathe." he said concerned.
I let out my breath, which I didn't know I was holding and he smiled softly.
" I forgot you were in love with school" he smirked.
I blushed.
" I just think my education is important." I said defensively.
He laughed quietly and I blushed deeper.
" Relax. I'm just teasing you." he whispered.
" No teasing." I whispered back.
He leaned his face closer to mine, looking into my eyes.
" I love you" he whispered softly.
I breathed in, shocked.
I mean I knew he loved me but we have never said I love you plainly just like that. We've only said things we loved about each other. His heart was pounding against mine and I saw he was waiting for a response. I did love everything about him. From his smile to the way he walks.
" I love you" I whispered back.
My eyes started filling with tears. I don't really know why.
I was really happy but at the same time scared. What happen if he hurt me again? What if he's just playing me?
My thoughts were interrupted when his lips pressed against mine, soft and gentle but with so much love and passion in it. Our lips moved in sync and I moved my hands up to his hair, tangling my fingers through it.
He wrapped his arms around my waist and he continued kissing me.
I left one hand in his hair and the other one on the back of his neck, pulling him closer.
I heard somebody clearing their throat and we untangled ourselves quickly.
My face was flushed and I was breathing heavy.
Both of our parents were standing in to doorway of the kitchen, all of the smiling except for my dad. I blushed deeper. Caleb didn't remove his hands from my waist and I leaned against him.
" Sorry. I'm about to finish the dishes." I mumbled, but I couldn't help myself from smiling.
I took a quick glance at Caleb and he was still looking at me.
I smiled and looked back at them.
" Well we are leaving. I'll see you later dear." Caleb's mom said to me.
She winked and I blushed. His dad looked at Caleb and mouthed something but I didn't know what he said. Caleb laughed so I assumed it must have been something funny.
" Bye Mr. and Mrs. Morris." I said.
They waved their goodbyes and my mom walked them to the door.
My dad stared at us with a scowl and I started to feel uncomfortable.
" Go to your room" my dad said with a frown.
His voice sounded commanding and I've never heard him like this so I took Caleb's hand and was about to walk past him when my dad stopped us.
" Without Caleb."
I looked at him and sadly let go of his hand, him giving me a quick squeezed before I let go.
" Alright." I said and walked upstairs to my room, closing the door and plopping down on my bed.
I wonder what my dads upset about.
But that kiss.
I definitely love him. There was so much love and I'm surprised I didn't moan. I must be getting better at that.
I smiled and got up, changing into a pair of comfortable basketball shorts and a tank top. I picked up my phone and called Sarah.
When she picked up she said what's up and I smiled before I spoke.
" I love him." I exclaimed.
