10. morning calls

"hello?" i ask. my voice is groggy as i talk into my phone, and i take a glance at the clock sitting on my nightstand.

3:18 a.m.

what the fuck?

"kyra? it's me, darwin."

i roll my eyes, the sleepiness already starting to fade away as i sit up on my bed. "yeah, no shit. i'm completely capable of reading the caller id on my phone."

darwin releases an annoyed sound before sniffing a few times.

"hey..." my brows instantly pull together, and the buzzers are going off in my mind. something's wrong. "are you alright? you don't sound too good."

"i'm fine," he answers quickly, almost too quickly, and i can almost imagine him waving my question away.

"okay..." i trail off after a long silence. "why are you calling me? if you don't have anything to say, i'll be happy to go back to sleep—"

"no."

what?

"i mean...can...can you meet me at brim's peak in fifteen minutes?"

i find myself nodding, already rising from my sitting position and pulling on my slippers. "yeah, but could you at least tell me what this is abo—"
