Jason knew he wasn't doing too well for a while
He knew it was only a matter of time. He kept it all to himself, the past 2 years were hell for him, treatment was a bitch. The doctor only told him he had 6 months in the best case scenario and he wasn't even close to the best case.
He hated having to lie to his friends, trying to make an excuses for his liquid diet and constant raspy voice. No one in his life ever questioned him too much because his lies seemed realistic.
His bones had been in so much pain lately but he'd always say he was sore from working out, but his lungs couldn't even handle more the 2 flights of steps.
"Chelsea?" A paramedic tapped her on the shoulder. She had been spaced out resting her head in the palms of her hands. She looked up slowly.
"We're almost at the hospital so when we get there we're going to have some police officers waiting to speak with you. Is that alright?"
She began to get defensive. "But why, I didn't do anything, she just collapsed- I'd never hurt Jason. I wouldn't do that-" and then came back the sobbing.
"I know, but we just need a better understanding of how all this happened. We gotta go now"
Sirens blared as the ambulance took a short turn into the side of the hospital for emergency vehicles. Chelsea got out the ambulance last after the the stretcher Jason's body laid across. She tried following behind him but then two officers stood in front of her showing their badges briefly, but all Chelsea did was walk right around them. The female officer walked beside her as they entered the hospital.
"Chelsea, myself along with my partner over there need to ask you a few questions about what lead up to Jason collapsing."
Chelsea sat in the waiting area, still refusing to say anything.
The both of them sat across from her, the man took out a notepad, scribbling down a few of his observations. Then he spoke "Chelsea we just want to know what happened. Please just walk us through how you got to this point."
She tilted her head a bit looking at the man with pure disgust.
"I just watched my best friend- basically my only friend take his last steady breath on a concrete sidewalk. I saw him choking on his own blood- you know he had that scary look in his eyes that look like contentment, like he'd been anticipating it to all end this way. Have either of you ever experienced that? No? Well don't sit here and expect me to give you a whole fucking run down of what a great day I've had. Give me a minute, why don't you tell me what got you to this point. distract me, tell me anything so I can stop replaying the moment that might of been my last conversation with person I love. Because if this is how it ends then..." her voice trailed her
Both officers leaned in, intrigued by how suddenly talkative she was
"Then what Chelsea."
She shook her head, keeping her gaze at her lap. The man finished the sentence for her.
"Then you won't be able to live with yourself, Chelsea?"
Once again it was silent, a silence that everyone understood.
"Honey, you need to tell us what happened, we are on your side. Don't make us out to be the bad guys we want to help Jason."
"No no no no." she mumbled
The male officer leans to his partners ear,
"Do you think we need to take her to the psych department?"
She nods sympathetically gazing at Chelsea.
" I'm not crazy you know, I just really want to be here when there's news about Jason, I don't want my mental health to be evaluated, or have people questioning me, assuming I've done something wrong. I'm not going anywhere. You people can whisper about me. But when you get home you have a family to explain how your day was to. People you can exaggerate the story of this hormonal teenage girl who probably killed her best friend, who she was secretly in love with. You guys have that. And I had that too, but guess where my family is. Take a wild guess as to who I break bread with and drag out simple stories to. He's in this fucking hospital with half a dozen people trying to save his life. And I'm sorry for all the disrespect but if you ask me on more time what happened, I'm going to lose my mind. So please... leave me alone."
Chelsea pleaded.
And they walked away to the front desk, letting a nurse know they couldn't get through to her but they have some suspicions and they suggested for someone to keep an on her.
And once again Chelsea was alone. Alone in a room with people so similar to her. They were all worried sick about someone who's life was currently in the hands of a stranger who they had no option but to trust.
She had so many regrets in that moment, from starting the argument to letting it get so far.
She began to resent herself for making the first big decision to step down off the ledge. She could've ended it there, she should've ended it there.
