I woke up the next morning with a smile and an overwhelming feeling of peace. I look up at Miles, who was still knocked out asleep and I smiled even harder.
"I can feel you staring at me," he mumbles, smiling slightly.
I giggle and push a few of his braids off his forehead, planting a kiss in their place.
"Good morning," I say as he opens his eyes.
"Good morning," he say in his raspy voice. He slowly slides himself up against the headboard and pulls me in to him, my head on his chest.
"I'm so tired," I mumble after a while, sliding out of the bed.
"Why are you getting up then?"
"It's Monday," I said getting my outfit together. "I'm going to work."
I showered and got ready for work. When I went back into the room, Miles was up and went playing video games.
"I'll see you later," I said, grabbing my purse.
"Alright. Love you."
***
"Damn," my client said looking at herself in the mirror. "You did that."
I smiled at her. "Thanks. Go and rock it girl."
"Alright so my appointment in two weeks?" She asks paying me.
"Mhmm, same time and place. Thanks, have a good day Bri."
"You too girl," she says walking out of the shop.
"Your work is getting better C," Ms. S says patting me on my back.
"Thanks, that means a lot coming from you. I been practicing a lot. I've been braiding your sons hair too," she smiles.
"You know I'm the one that accidentally told him to dye his damn hair red. It was a joke and he took it serious," she says, rolling her eyes.
"I notice we gotta choose words wisely with him."
"Yes! I'm glad finally someone-," Ms. S grabs my hand, cutting herself off. "Is that a ring."
"It's just a promise ring," I show her. "It's a promise from Miles that he doesn't think of us a temporary. He wants a future."
I find it kinda weird he didn't tell his mom about his plan on giving me the ring. They're closer then usual Mom and sons but she looks like she has no clue at all.
"Wow. It's beautiful," she says, watching it dance in the light.
"Hey," a voice says making me snap around quickly.
"Hey baby girl," Diego says, standing near my station.
"Diego why are you here? How do you know where I work," I say, eyes widened.
"You aren't hard to track," he laughed as if he was just mocking me. "Where's your little boyfriend?"
"Wouldn't you like to know? Go away Diego."
"Nah I think I'll stay," he says, sitting down grabbing a magazine.
"Looks like she doesn't want you here," Ms. Shannon says, stepping in. "So why don't you Go Diego Go."
"Like I said I think I'll stay."
Now I didn't know that Miles planned on bringing me food even though I should have expected he would. He always brings me food when he's not going into the studio and his mom and I close but I didn't even think to ask. So I felt like I had been saved by the bell when he strolled in.
"What's this nigga doing here?" He says roughly, setting the food down.
"I don't know Miles, he won't leave," his mom explains.
Miles yanks Diego out of his chair by his collar, pressing him against a wall. I can see he's truly angry, something I rarely see.
"Why are you here?"
"I came to visit Cordelia," he smiles. "Her heart is always gonna be with me."
"But what did my boys tell you last time you went trying to fuck with her, huh? You think this is a fucking game but you haven't realized I don't play about her," he goes off. "That's my girlfriend, I have her heart, she has mine. You've already been warned."
Miles pushes him over and starts beating his ass.
"Son, that's enough," his mother says to him after a while.
"Yeah baby, it's okay," I say.
He stops eventually after the two of us trying to convince him. He pushed Diego out the door and he leaves immediately.
"Did he touch you guys?" We both nod.
"Alright," he says, putting his arm around me and the other around his mother.
