I go back into my room and change into a gray tshirt and pajama pants. I

lie under the covers and think about what my life means right now. I don't

have much more of life ahead of me, and while I do, I'm here. I'll never

have a wife and get married, I'll never have kids. I'll never even have

another kiss and I'm only 16. It's terrible what the Capitol does for

entertainment here. I try to wrap my mind around the sick twisted ways of

the Capitol. I want to come out alive from the Hunger Games, but so does

everyone else. I think of ways that could help me in the arena. Katniss and

I barely know each other, we've only talked about twice and then there was

the bread situation. Would we possibly be allies in the games? Does she

even like me? I was nice to everyone at school. Friends with everyone,

really. But Katniss was always shy and quiet. I am strong but what else?

Nothing. Katniss is an amazing hunter and has been supporting her family by

hunting illegally with Gale since her dad died. I don't even know why I'm

thinking of Katniss, she's never even looked at me like a real person.

Whatever, I close my eyes and drift off to sleep.

I wake up to Effie banging on my door, "Wake up! We have a big, big day

ahead of us!" She says.

I get dressed in shorts and a shirt and meet the rest of them at the table.

It's filled with lots of foods that I've never even seen before. Katniss is

eating her food quietly like always. She sits back from her full stomach

and says, "So, you're supposed to give us advice?"

"Here, take notes. Stay alive." Haymitch cracking up

"It's not funny. You're supposed to teach us how to find shelter, food, water." I say angrily.

He takes another drink and I've had enough, I grab his drink out of his hand and in response he puts his dirty foot against my chest and snatches his drink back. He gets a piece of toast and goes for the jelly. Katniss takes a knife and wedges it into the table barely missing Haymitch's fingers.

"So, how do you find shelter?" Katniss says annoyed.

"Do I actually have fighters this year?" Haymitch says chuckling.

We finally get Haymitch to agree to help us if we stay out of his drinking. Fair enough. We finish breakfast in quietness until Effie starts blabbing on and on about the plan for today. Were meeting our stylists today and getting a total makeover to get us in shape for interviews before the Games. The Hunger Games isn't a fashion show, but you want to look good to get more sponsors. As the Capitol people come to take our food away, the whole cart turns black. We're under a tunnel, probably running through the mountains leading to the Capitol. I hate being near the Capitol, I hate everything about them.

They rule Panem in poverty while they live in things we can only wish for.

Everything about them seems too real. While we wear the same shrubs over

and over they were astonishing bright outfits, new ones every day. Crazy

wigs, makeup and they can even get altered to look even weirder. Dye skin,

raised eyebrows 24/7. The weirdest person I've seen in the Capitol was on

TV, she had tattoos all over her body and her skin was tinted an almost

gold color. Her smiles was huge, will razor sharp teeth. The mysterious of

the Capitol never fail to amuse me.

The train stops and hundreds of people from the capitol are screaming our

names. Is this really their entertainment? Seeing 24 kids fights to the

death, but before that cheer and scream them on? It's terrible. Effie

guides us out and leads us into a huge building. Katniss and I get directed

into separate ways and I end up going with Haymitch. He leads me into a

room with lots of tables and counter filled with things to put on me. I get

tweezed and plucked and waxed everywhere on my body. But not as much as I

thought I would. I get dressed in a gown and wait in a small room on a

metal table for my designer.

A short lady comes in with long straight purple hair and silver eye liner

on. She's has bright pink lipstick and a black tank top and black jeans on.

She is one of the calmest looking people I have ever seen in the Capitol.

She introduces herself as Portia.
