Dan and I wander through duty free with forty minutes to spare before our gate opens. I realise with apprehension that in about sixteen hours I'll have to confront my mother for the first time in six years. Will she even recognise me? How much will she have changed? A shiver runs impulsively down my spine as I briefly entertain the idea of going to see my father. I shake it off immediately, but not before my hand goes involuntarily to my ribs and slides over the ghost of a bruise. Dan speaks beside me, and I murmur in response. I watch him walk into the men's room. So that's what he was saying. Huh. Glancing around the shop we're in, the golden glint of a toblerone catches my eye, and I decide to go and buy one while I wait for Dan. As I stand in the line, I notice a familiar looking face enter the shop. Her dark hair is loose around her shoulders, with two small braids keeping it out of her face. She's holding hands and laughing with a tall brown-haired boy who clearly can't take his eyes off her. I wonder for a second if that's what other people see when Dan and I are together. My mind struggles to place her. Why does she seem so familiar?
"Got a sweet tooth?" I turn and see a smirking dyed-blonde guy, about nineteen. Who the hell does he think he is? I raise an eyebrow coolly and ignore him.
"Cause I know where I'd like to see it in action..." he grins smugly, evidently delighted with his "line".
"Do you," I reply icily, taking a step to move forwards with the queue, away from him. He steps in front of me and places his arm against the wall, over my head, pushing me out of the queue. He's wearing a snapback and a white muscle tee. I almost puke.
"Excuse me?" I try to push through, but his grip is like iron. Jeez.
"C'mon, babe," he snickers. "Just wanna have a little fun," he wraps his arm lazily around my waist.
"Dude!" I recoil, but he won't budge. "What's your problem!?"
"Am I interrupting something...?" Dan's voice is dripping venom as he drapes his arm possessively over my shoulders.
"Dan," I murmur, relieved. "Could you give us a second?"
"My pleasure," breathes Dan, as he pulls his fist back and punches the guy squarely in the jaw.
I hear the collective gasps of myself and the rest of the store.
"Dan!" I yell. He doesn't respond but slides his arm down from around my shoulders to my waist, his hand resting on my hip. Oh good, so he knows he's in trouble.
I tear away and fold my arms furiously. His hand drops limply to his side, and a part of me yearns to take it and press it to my heart. No! You're angry at him, Nemesis! I narrow my eyes as I watch the shop manager ask him to please leave. Serves him right. I turn on my heel and march to the other side of the store to replace my toblerone. No way am I going all the way through that queue again.
"Oh, my, GOD!!!!" I turn, flinching to be faced with the familiar looking dark haired girl. The guy who I assume is her boyfriend smiles awkwardly, raising his hands helplessly.
"Uh..." I bite my lip, and then it hits me. Ally! "ALLY!!"
"Oh my GOD! Where have you BEEN?!!" She always was a loud one.
I laugh and pull her into a hug.
"Oh, you know.. Around.."
"Care to elaborate?? I haven't seen you in, like, six months!!"
