Harvey's P.O.V
The library had the same old painful silence to it that I always hated. I had no idea where max was so I just looked for a book. I was looking at the shelf when I saw another kid on the other side. I decided to talk to him through the bookshelf.
"Hey. Do you know any good books here?" I asked him through the bookshelf.
"yeah come over here. I'm James by the way." He signaled for me to join him.
"Hi. I'm Harvey." I told him.
"Oh yeah, I know you. You've got thousands of followers on music.ly" he said. I didn't expect everyone to know me but I guess people do- even James.
"These books are good." James pointed to a series sat on the top row. "Thanks." I reached up for the first one.
"Do you wanna go get ice cream after school?" I asked James. It was the last week of year eight for us so it was really hot. He nodded his head and we both sat at a table.
"Do you need any help with German?" I offered.
"Um yeah please. How do you say 'I played football' in German?" He asked.
"Ich habe fußball gespielt." I replied. He wrote it down and continued with his homework. That was when I remembered that we aren't having any proper lessons for the rest of the day. We had a double food tech lesson and we were making fruit salad. We were there for about twenty minutes before the bell went off. James went to German class and I ran to food tech. I accidentally bumped into someone. "oh sorry" I say and rush off again without even looking back. I haven't seen Max at all apart from this morning. Where could he be? I shrugged it off, he was probably skiving or at a sports club.
I ran into the food tech room before the second bell went off, Mrs Rayland didn't like it if I was late. I sat down and got out my booklet. After five minutes of lecturing about knives, we were finally allowed to savage a load of fruit.
"Um, hello. Sorry I'm late, this is my first day." Said a voice that was in the direction of the doors. The whole class turned around and saw a new girl.
"Its fine. Do you want to start preparing your fruit? There's a free space over there." Mrs Rayland pointed to the worktop next to me. I immediately looked down and suddenly took a great interest in the kiwi I was chopping.
"Hi. I'm Poppy. What's your name?" She asked me.
"Hi Poppy. I'm Harvey, we are making fruit salad." I replied to her. "Ok cool. Nice to meet you." She picked up an orange and sliced it into ten perfect sections. I just stared at it until she waved her hand in front of my face.
"Earth to Harvey." She said, snapping me out if my daze. I immediately felt a wave of embarrassment rush through my head, making my cheeks go pink.
"Oh sorry." I stuttered. I could feel my cheeks go even hotter but then she just went back to her fruit salad.
After about five minutes, my worktop was dripping with fruit juice and orange peel was covering my whole table.
"Harvey, this happens every time. You need to learn to be more tidy." Mrs Rayland rolled her eyes and stropped off, and Poppy and I just laughed a bit.
The final result of the fruit salads we made were very different. I had completely messed mine up and the plastic tub I used was over filled. Poppy's, however, was perfectly chopped and arranged into a really cool pattern.
"Ha yours is really good!" I pointed at Poppy's fruit salad. He cheeks went slightly pink.
"Thanks. Yours looks good too." She nodded her head to the fruit salad I had made a pigs ear out of.
"No its not." I said. She just laughed.
"Excellent Poppy, A*. Harvey, better luck next time, You just scraped a C." Mrs Rayland said to us. I pretended to luck upset but in reality, I was happy I didnt get an E.
"You deserved an A*" I told her, once again making her cheeks go a light shade of pink. After another 20 minutes of washing up, the bell rings and we all come rushing out. Poppy and I exchanged numbers and then we all left. That was when Mrs Rayland grabbed my shoulder.
"You are to come into school early and give Poppy a tour. Ok? By the way your homework is to practise cutting fruit without messing it up." She called after me but I was already gone.
I sprinted to the lockers in our form room and met Max there.
"Where have you been the whole day?" I asked him.
"Lessons, duh. My timetable permanently changed because there's a new girl." He whispered the last part. He nodded towards Poppy who was talking to a few other girls.
"I have to give her a tour tomorrow." I said quietly.
"ha, lucky." Max playfully shoved my shoulder but then his face went white. "Wait, forget I said that." He walked away again. I laughs slightly but he turned around and glared at me.That night, I lay in bed thinking about what Max had said. Had he already met Poppy or something?
