Chapter 6 Childhood innocence lost

 Waking up to my alarm, I stretched then headed for a shower, knowing today would be very depressing for me. I dressed in a nice white western shirt, dark blue tight jeans, boots and my white Stetson then dialed Brad's room to see if he was ready for breakfast. We met up on the walkway and went down for the continental breakfast in the hotel lobby, I grabbed some fruit, coffee and an english muffin as Brad filled up with eggs, toast and some danishes making me chuckle at him. Brad smiled saying " Hey now I need my morning pick me up boss and I really miss Jeb's awesome breakfasts by the way." I nodded yes answering " I miss home too  cowboy, so let's get this done asap." He nudged me smiling and softly said " I know what you're thinking so let's wait to see your home before you get all melancholy on me okay?" I sighed nodding yes back to him then we sat down to eat. After  we finished, cleaned up our stuff we headed to the car and down the street to the courthouse where the sheriff's office is located.

I parked in front then we both got out and walked inside the courthouse going down the hall to the office. Brad stayed right behind me and I asked the girl at the counter if I could talk to the sheriff  then she smiled and dialed her phone saying " Sheriff Mason, there is a lady asking to see you." I mouthed ~ Kandi Young~ when she looked at me then repeated my name, saying okay in the phone. She told us to have a seat and he would be right out so I thanked her, before I turned we all heard " Now that's a nice looking figure in front of you  Kelly." The girl looked past me smirking then answered " Behave Jacob, you do represent this office, deputy." I turned smirking to see my ex high school boyfriend standing  there, Jacob Hall, as he took a step back looking stunned at me. Brad laughed saying " Well nice affect there Kandi, he looks a bit dazed to see you." I chuckled as Jacob walked up to us sighing " Should have known such a bodacious body had to be yours Kandi."

I chuckled more answering " And I should have figured rude comments had to come from you Jacob." I have to admit he looked hot in his uniform and as he eyed me from head to toe softly growling deep, Brad cleared his throat as I leaned back against the counter. Brad spoke first saying " Brad  Walsh, Deputy Hall, so there is history here?" I smirked when Jacob shook his head  replying " Yea three years worth, Kandi and I were high school sweethearts until a misunderstanding broke us up."   I laughed patting Jacob's chest saying  " Oh yea right, you drunk and in bed having sex with Jenny while we were together was a misunderstanding alright bud."

Jacob frowned replying " I told you then and stand by it today, she spiked my drink that night, god Kandi I loved you, still do, and you never trusted me since that night."  I tilted my head saying " Still don't Jacob, even  if you are a cop now." Jacob stepped up to me, Brad stepped in front of him saying " Sir, I think it's best you step back as the boss here has a fiancee' and I know that look in your eyes right now." I raised an eye brow smirking at Jacob then he sighed "You're engaged Kandi, and his boss?" I nodded yes to Jacob, patting Brad on the shoulder  so he moved back to my side then I said " Yes I am Jacob to both, Brad is one my wranglers on the ranch I manage and a close friend, yes I'm engaged to a very loving faithful man, which isn't Brad , no disrespect Brad." I stared into his amazing sea green eyes, still awed by his looks as he smiled knowing that he still had an effect on me, then the sheriff came up to us. " No way, Kandi Young, how you have grown and blossomed over the years." I smiled  and hugged Sheriff Mason softly saying " Yes sir, it tends to happen as we age from high school to adulthood, how are you Jeff, and the family?"

He hugged me back tightly as he told me how everyone is, catching up some, then said " I'm sorry I can't go with you to the house Kandi, Jacob here will go and let him know what all is destroyed or missing for our case. The two in custody aren't going anywhere soon." I sighed as Jeff rubbed my back softly saying " I'm truly sorry young lady, your parents were fine folk and it irks me to see this happen to you and your home." I thanked him as he told Jacob to make sure to get everything on paper that I noticed amiss at my house making Jacob nod to him, Jeff smiled at us then headed back into his office. As Brad and I finally headed out from the sheriff's office following  Jacob to my house to assess the damages, reality hit and I sighed deeply making Brad turn to me  saying" Calm deep breaths, we can fix anything, I swear to you boss, we will make it alright." After we got outside Jacob asked" Okay so I will follow you, where are parked?" I chuckled as Brad smirked saying " Sir, you're leaning against it." Jacob turned looking at the Dodge then smiled saying " Nice car, so lead the way Kandi." I nodded then Brad opened his door as Jacob walked around opening mine.
