Theodore Semaj Washington
I glanced at my alarm clock and noticed that I only had twelve minutes left before it actually went off.
Twelve minutes that I needed to get through the day.
It was a new year, my last school year at that, and I was dreading it.
Everything was going great for me. In middle school I went to King Science Academy, and due to my academic achievements there, I got offered a partial academic scholarship to go to a boarding school in California for high school and went for my first three years. Earning no less than a 4.2 GPA all 6 semesters.
Since my parents never moved away from Parkway Ave due to my dad being gang affiliated over here, it resulted in my dad being murdered this summer. Two months before my senior year to be exact.
"Theo, are you up and out of bed?" My mother asked in her normal soft tone while knocking on the door.
"Yeah ma, I'm up." I replied as I stood up and stretched.
I looked through my closet and decided on some ripped jeans, a white shirt, with my Addidas Yeezy jacket and my retro Oreo 5's. Once I got myself together, I took a snapchat picture for the ladies back in California with the Oklahoma City filter and walked downstairs.
"I made you some breakfast for your first day. I even made you some turkey bacon." She announced as soon as I reached the bottom of the stairs and I immediately walked into the kitchen to see a bowl fruit salad next to a glass of cranberry juice, and a plate that held turkey bacon, pancakes, eggs, fried potatoes with peppers and onions, and a small bowl of oatmeal to the side.
I almost cried at the sight in front of me.
"Mama, you done did it now." I said and she laughed at my silliness and gave me a kiss on the cheek.
"I'm about to head out. I have an important meeting this morning." She said and I looked at her in confusion.
She continued, "I didn't want to tell you, because I don't want to get your hopes up, but we might be actually getting out of Gateway Heights. Just give me some time and you might not have to go to that school. I know you don't want to."
"Ma, don't even pressure yourself. I'll be okay." I said, even though I wasn't sure if I would be okay, I just said it to make her feel better.
She sighed and looked down before looking at me.
"Son, there's a big difference between this school and the one you went to. You're a good boy and you have you head straight on your shoulders. There are a lot of rough individuals at this new school and all I ask is that you please don't lose yourself." She said as she looked at me with a serious expression.
"I promise I'm not. I told you that I'm gonna do big things and I'll be damned if any of these niggas at this school ruins that for me." I said confidently.
She gave me a look due to my choice of words and I dropped my fork and gave her an alarmed look.
"Please don't hit me, I'm sorry mom." I said in fear and she rolled her eyes at me and sighed.
"Well, I'm going to head on out. Have a great day baby. I love you." She said as she kissed my cheek and thumped my lip, before walking out.
"See you later ma." I said as I held my lip and continued to scroll through my twitter feed.
After finishing breakfast, I noticed that I only had 12 minutes to get to school. I actually had 30 but I want to get my schedule early so that I can be there for 1st hour on time to make sure I don't miss anything important.
I grabbed my phone, keys, and wallet and rushed out and got in my car and sped out the door for my first day of school at Marshall High School.
