Really needed that week off, got sick with the flu and honestly didn't feel like writing. Enjoy! Also, #PrayforMiniandJay
-------------Pain flooded his senses as he felt debris fall onto him from above, specifically a medium sized chunk of concrete which had nicked the left side of his head. His vision blurred, but not for long as he shook his head to clear it, pushing himself to move forward. He had to live, he just had to.
The exit was in his sights, only a few car lengths away. With his hopes up, he used the last of his energy to sprint forward. He was halfway there when a large pile of debris crashed into his back, forcing him onto the ground with a screech of agony.
He twisted his body underneath the various objects, glancing at the still clear exit as he did so. Ignoring the pain in his spine, he tried to crawl forward, gripping a nearby chunk of stone in order to pull himself forward. After a few very painful attempts, he finally managed to pull himself free.
As soon as the weight lifted off his back, he curled into a ball, feeling warm blood drip down his back, that wound was going to sting for a while. Exhausted, he considered if exiting was even worth it anymore, he undoubtedly had a concussion, his back was ripped to shreds, and his limbs had lost the will to move, staying where he was seemed very appealing.
"Evan!" He heard a voice call out to him, concern evident in his voice. Matthew, he thought to himself.
The other boy raced over to him, gripping his shoulders as he turned his friend over. He looked up at his friend with a pained expression since he was lying on his injured back. "Hey." He croaked out, coughing immediately afterwards.
"Shit. I didn't mean for this to happen, you know that right? C'mon, we have to go now!" Matthew said, helping Evan to his feet, cautiously placing a hand on his back to help him forward. Evan looked at his friend thankfully.
"I know you didn't mean to, Matt..." Evan said, trailing off as tiredness washed over him, causing him to start stumbling.
"Stay with me, Ev. We're almost there, ok?" Panic had flooded into Matthew's voice as his friend's head drooped against his chest. He had to live, Matthew couldn't live with himself if he had let Evan die.
Once they had reached the outside, Matthew looked for a place where his friend could rest. Spotting a tree not too far away, he urged Evan forward and laid him down underneath the tree, shielded from the sun. The injured boy shifted his position so that he was laying on his side, curled up tightly.
Matthew felt a pang of guilt as he saw how much pain Evan was in. He had been the cause of the collapsing building, unaware his friend was going to be trapped inside, so he blamed himself for his injuries.
So, with a heavy sigh, Matthew sat down next to his friend, careful to avoid hurting him further.
And together they watched their fourth orphanage fall apart.
------------
Abruptly, Evan was pulled out of sleep with a sudden rush of adrenaline. His breath wasn't heavy, but it was definitely abnormal, being a bit faster than usual.
He sat, looking around the room to assure himself that the building wasn't falling down. These memories are getting way too vivid, he thought to himself.
"Told you." The voice made him jump, not expecting Vanoss to pop up so soon.
"Told me what?" Evan snapped, getting out of bed. A glance at the clock told him it was ten o'clock in the evening, he had slept all day.
"You don't want to be me, you're too scared." His smug voice irked Evan, because although his comment was annoying and insulting, it was true. Evan didn't want to be him, if it meant remembering countless moments, months, years of pain and suffering, only to do it all over again every day of his life.
"You're right. I am scared, because right now I'm an ignorant fool. But why aren't you scared? What drives you to keep doing this to yourself?" His hand hovered over the door knob, tempted to leave Vanoss with his statement, but his curiosity got the best of him, so he stayed.
After a few moments of silence, Evan sighed and opened the door, he had gotten halfway when suddenly it slammed shut. He looked up to see Vanoss, who had clearly closed it.
"You'll know what drives me, what makes me so fearless....when you watch exactly what I had to watch years ago. When everything around you crumbles, leaving you alone in the dark. Then you'll know why you do this to yourself, because otherwise, you won't feel human enough. I promise you, Evan, what you have right now is not going to last for long, and when it falls apart, I'll be here. But until then, I'd remember everything you can, because one day they won't want you anymore."
He vanished, just like that, leaving a shaken up Evan alone in his bedroom, his appetite no longer there. In a way, what Vanoss had said sounded like a threat, but Evan knew it wasn't. Vanoss was his subconscious trying to get him through his amnesia, but what he had said sent a shiver down his spine.
Because one day they won't want you anymore, those words repeated themselves over and over in his head. What could they mean?
"You'll know what drives me....
What makes me so fearless.....
When it all falls apart....
You'll be left alone in the dark....
And when it does crumble around you......
I'll be here.....
So remember all you can.....
Because one day they won't want you anymore......"
