luke & sarah // "Keep the change."
"Hi, can I get a medium Caramel Shaken Latte with soy milk and a low fat banana muffin?" a squeaky voice emerged from the freshman in front of the Coffee Hut's cash register.
Sarah Martin picked up what felt like her three hundredth cardboard cup of the day and wrote down in black sharpie the name of the North Christian Academy student that was in line. Her name was "Kristina" and she even decided to spell it out for Sarah because she claimed it "really annoyed her when people spelled it with a C".
Sarah just gave her a fake smile and did as she said. Her asshole of a boss Chris, always told her the customer was right. Even if it was an annoying freshman who probably just strolled into NCA's Coffee Hut to simply take a picture of her Caramel Shaken Latte and instagram an overly edited picture of it.
It wasn't like Sarah hated her job. In fact she kind of liked it. Being around good smelling coffee and writing down names, matching them to faces all day. But Chris had called her in about twenty-five minutes ago demanding her to come in and work Emily's shift since she called with a mean stomach bug. Sarah had been doing really important stuff (like shopping for skirts on topshop.com) and was utterly offended that he made her quit what she was doing to waltz in and cover.
Sarah knew that work was fine usually. It was just sometimes embarrassing to see familiar faces walk through every day knowing that she was in a bright yellow apron and hat that did nothing to her figure and made her complection look washed out. She had been working in the Coffee Hut since freshman year due to the fact that now that she moved from Tennessee to California, where shops like Brandy Melville were present, to attend boarding school she suddenly needed extra spending cash.
So Sarah worked their daily. Her shifts changing around her class schedule which was less than exciting this year considering it was senior year. The only class she really loved her sewing elective. She got to make her own clothes and get a grade for it, it still baffled her as to how that worked.
Other than that, she had practically given up on trying all together when it came to school. She had already done the hard part, getting out of Tennessee and going to California, now all she had to do was graduate and find her way in the world.
"Ummm, hello?" Kristina with a K waved her hand in front of Sarah. She had been caught up daydreaming as usual and had completely diverted her focus from the squeaky freshman.
"Right, sorry. Uh, that'll be $8.60."
The girl flashed her platinum American Express card, something completely normal amongst NCA Freshman. She handed it to Sarah who swiped it on the register and gave her her receipt. She went to the bakery section to fetch her muffin and placed it on a plate in front of her. Kristina with a K thanked her and took off to wait for her drink while probably tweeting something off her white iPhone.
The next customer came up to Sarah's cash register was a short red head who looked about twelve. Does this boy even go here? Sarah worried that he was lost and she might have to point him in the direction of the elementary school down the road.
"Hi, welcome to the Coffee Hut what would you lik-" Sarah's began her trained script that she said to every customer, but was interrupted when her glance somehow met the door and a tall, blonde boy stepped into the coffee shop.
She suddenly lost all ability to speak or think, as she looked at the stranger. He wore a grey Nirvana shirt with the classic smiley face on it. His jeans clung tight to him and he wore white converse, the only shoes Sarah ever wore. He took off his black sunglasses he had on to shield his eyes from the August sun and stuffed them into his back pocket and stood at the back of the five person line.
