Chapter Four: Trials and Attempts.
(Y/N) wandered the woods aimlessly. Her camera around her neck, she snapped photos of the tall pines. Everything was gorgeous and perfect for her nature-photographer dreams. She took picture of mushrooms, small birds, reptiles, and flowers besides the trees. Nothing abnormal was in sight, though.
"(Y/N)? (Y/N), are you around here?" Dipper's voice echoed through the trees.
"Over here!" She called.
Dipper made his way awkwardly towards (Y/N), watching where he stepped like he was paranoid about everything. As a matter of fact, he was.
"Where have you been?" Dipper interrogated, reaching his destination.
"Just taking photos. What? I have to inform you guys wherever I go?"
Dipper laughed awkwardly, trying to think of a reasonable explanation. "No I guess not, but it's nice to know at least?"
"That sounds very reassuring."
"Thank you, I try." Dipper was not flawed by her slight hostility. "So what have you got so far?"
"Hm? Oh, yes. I have gotten pretty much the regular 'nature walk' photos." (Y/N) opened the gallery on her camera, strolling through a couple of pictures for her friend to see.
"Holy crap- (Y/N), these are amazing!" Dipper gawked at her photos.
"Thanks. I have prize winning photos, so in a sense, it's kinda my job. I started four years ago, but I really have worked hard to just keep improving. I'm planning on going to a college that supports photography, which is kind of hard, finding a good one at least."
"May I?" Dipper reached for her camera.
"Sure thing." With the camera still on her neck, the girl gave him her camera to inspect the screen more closely.
Dipper looked at the captivating pictures of pines, turtles, snakes, and other small treasures of nature.
"(Y/N), do you know what this is?" Dipper stopped on a peculiar mushroom. It had an eerie violet glow and its top had a rough texture to it. It did catch the photographer's eye. She got a straight on viewpoint of it whilst she held her camera to the ground, angling it up to get the under show of the top.
"It was shiny." (Y/N)'s eyes gleamed.
Dipper pulled out his journal from his vest. He started flipping pages, his mind sorting of where he had last seen it. "Aha!" He landed on a page and shoved the book at (Y/N). "Percepshroom. It increases your intelligence. I tried to use it one time, but Waddles ate it."
"Waddles?"
"Oh that's right, you haven't met him." Dipper shook his head. "Waddles is a pig, Mabel's pet. However Mabel's friend, Candy, she took care of Waddles while we are away."
"Makes sense. Well, if it's Mabel we're talking about it makes sense. So, this percepshroom?"
"Oh right. There's nothing special about it, except it's apparently deadly if you eat it- humans at least since Waddles proved pigs can eat it. But it's best to stay away from it, seeing that anything can really happen there." Dipper slammed the book shut, stuffing it back into his outer garment. "So I guess you checked one item off your list."
"I guess I did." (Y/N) stretched her arms out. "I think I can be done with this photography walk. We can head back."
"Sounds good to me." Dipper nodded.
-x-
"Grunkle Ford!" Dipper called, squeaking out the sound off the top of his lungs.
"What are you needing?" Ford sounded more pleased than the first time (Y/N) met him.
"I think you might want to reconsider having (Y/N) take picture for your journals."
Ford sighed and faced Dipper, seeing (Y/N) behind him with a feeling of discomfort.
"Dipper, we talked about this."
"But you didn't even give her a chance." The brunette argued. "You just said you wouldn't allow it without even looking at her work."
"You're not going to stop trying are you." Ford sighed. He pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose. "Just, show me the pictures."
(Y/N) wasn't exactly thrilled, more nervous, and a little broken from Ford's recent behavior. Hesitantly, she handed the camera to Dipper, who showed it to Ford.
Ford sighed, leaning on a table. He scrolled through photos, impressed by each one, but didn't disturb his poker face. He looked up from the camera. "There's only one thing in here that I can even use." He stated blandly.
"In my defense, Mr. Ford, I don't really have any clue of what I'm looking for, nor where to look. I know you don't trust me with the journals, so I am kinda winging it. Also, I'm just showing you what I'm capable of." (Y/N) shrugged.
"I see." Ford said.
"So will you let her at least try?" Dipper asked, his voice hesitant and nearly cracking.
"Dipper, we've talked about this. Trust no-"
"But you trust me!" Dipper exclaimed. "How can you be so hypocritical?"
"Dipper, she had just came back from who knows where."
"Homedale, Idaho." (Y/N) corrected.
"It's on the boarder of Oregon." Dipper added.
"Right, sure. Whatever. Dipper, it's bad enough we let a stranger into our house and even in my lab."
Dipper didn't give in. "And she hasn't done anything sly, Ford. Has anything been out of place, besides your judgement?"
"Dipper, I'm not playing games."
"Neither am I." The boy crossed his arms. "She could come with us, researching things, take pictures over and over again instead of waiting to draw them out." (Y/N) rubbed her arm, feelings a bit awkward and out of place.
Ford rubbed his temples. "I've been as lenient as possible with you. Dipper, the answer is no."
"I'm fighting for my family." Dipper snapped. "I'm fighting for what's right, what I believe in. I'd give up a lot for (Y/N). Like how you almost did for us."
"Dipper-"
"Ford." Dipper pleaded, grabbing your wrist sealing the fact there's no going back.
"It's still a no."
