Ch.32

"Yes... I am engaged to a Dragon Slayer –" before I can even finish what I want to say, Dane makes me pause as he takes control of the horse and starts Sparkle forward into a light trot, "I didn't have any say in who I was engaged to," I quickly add although I was sick of having to remind him and Goldy of this one fact that was so simple to remember.

"I'm showing you to your brother," Dane growls low in my ear.

"Oh..." I go quite, I have a feeling Ross must be close then.

In the most intensely silent minute of my life, Dane and I finally reach a tiny clearing with a big tree and cut ropes that have fallen to the base of the trunk. My heart seems to sink and rise all at once.

"He escaped," I whisper. That, or a Dragon maybe found him and ate him, but that wasn't a thought I was going to consider.

Then I realize Ross escaping didn't particularly make my situation any better right now. Dane was silent behind me and I knew this was because he didn't expect to find Ross free of his bonds. My anger seems to spike for a moment and override my fear as I recognize just how much Dane didn't care about hurting my brother.

I decide to get off the horse, so I bring one leg over the saddle about to jump off but Dane's arm snakes around my waist just as I see a gold mist coming through the trees also. It isn't long before Goldy solidifies into his glorious human form near the tree where the ropes were. He doesn't look happy as he glances at the cut ropes and then at me.

How could I have not realized? Dane only went so quiet when he was communicating with Goldy and he had blocked me out of the link.

He had told Aneurin that Jordan Culling was a Dragon slayer and to come here.

Dane's arm finally loosens from around me, which allows me to slip off the horse so I do, grateful for the space.

"Grab those ropes, brother," Dane orders, "We'll be needing them for our mate."

"We cannot stay around here long," Goldy says and I'm shocked by the sad note in his voice, the slight lilt that suggested he felt betrayed and jilted. He wasn't even looking me in the eye as I stood at the bottom of the horse feeling so extremely... guilty?

"I didn't tell you both when Jordan told me he was a Dragon slayer, because I knew you would both react this way," I say quietly, Dane is the only one looking at me and when I meet his gaze I instantly regret it.

Intense fury mixed with his Dragon's magic make his eyes look like swirling pools of the deepest black, no other colour showing through.

"I don't like Culling," I add, feeling desperation slowly seeping in, "I hate him!"
