Sometimes life just gets to hard, doesn't it? Like a thick fog just kinda falls over your entire existence and you're stuck underneath it,without air?Yeah,I get that a lot too,but the one thing that makes me feel better is the sweet smell of this little music shop a few blocks away from me called Digital Planet; the smell of plastic and vinyl and dust collecting on the untouched sleeves left on the shelves. Whenever things got too tough,I would always go there and browse for a while to get my mind off of it,and even buy something occasionally.
So it wasn't exactly out of the ordinary for me to wander down there again for maybe the hundredth time, the rain pelting down onto the sidewalk and dripping into bright hair.
The bell hung above the door rang lightly as I pushed the glass.Instantly, the smell hit me,and the weather outside seemed almost sunny and 75 to me.
"Hey,Jules,"The man behind the counter said, his eyes hardly moving from the paper in front of him.
"Hey,Don." I waved absent-mindedly as I made my way into the back of the store, straight to the soft-rock section. This rack had already been scanned by me countless numbers of times, but there was no harm in one more look just in case I missed something.
I hummed a Plain White T's song under my breath as I ran my fingers over the cases.
The bell rang at the door again, followed by Don greeting the customer warmly.Probably another regular like me,by the sound of Donny's voice. I felt a presence next to me after a minute, but I paid no attention.I was busy in my own world, thank you very much.
But when I spotted a CD that caught my eye,and my hand wasn't the only one that went to it,I had to look over. I was met by a surprised face looking down at me.
"Excuse me"I said sharply,my words coming out a little more rude than I had meant.
His shocked eyes softened slightly, curving his mouth up into a half smile,"Sorry,"He grabbed the CD off the rack and straightened up.
He was quite tall.Blonde, dimples, with kind eyes that held a glint of play-fullness behind them. Ignoring his smile,I turned to the rack, then back to him.
"That's the last one."
"It is."
"I'd intended to buy that."I stated simply, setting a smirk on my face defiantly.
"You don't really seem like the One Republic type."His eyes flickered to my hair.Consciously,I tugged at the bright pink that hung around my face.
"And? I'm up for trying anything new."
His smile widened,"Well,I'm afraid you're going to have to find something else new."He held the CD down by his side,"This is for a friend."
I crossed my arms and gave a small huff,"I'm sure you're girlfriend would be fine with Justin Bieber or something."
He laughed quickly,"I think Luke may kill me if I borough that home."
I rolled my eyes at his sarcasm, but couldn't help but be intrigued by him somewhat. He seemed like the type to be shy,but for some reason he was coming across very confident.
I held my hand out,"Juliet,"I greeted,smiling.
"Ashton."As he took my hand to shake it,I grabbed for the CD in his other. He jerked it back and raised it up above his head,"Oh!Quick."
I glared, annoyed at myself for being a measly 5"1...stupid genetics..
"Don,"He called over his shoulder,"Have anymore One Republic in stock?"
"Sure,I've probably got some in the store room!"
I gave the boy in front of me a smile,"Aren't you a gentlemen."
"Anytime,Jules."He grinned as Don moved past us into the store room behind us,"So,uh,that hair of yours...reminds me of a friend of mine."
"Yeah?" I went back to looking through the CDs so I didn't seem too involved in the conversation.
"Yeah. His name's Michael;he tends to look to the rainbow for inspiration when it comes to hair."
I looked back at him,an eyebrow raised,"Pink?"
"Yeah I wouldn't put it past him.The bloke is kinda crazy."I chuckled a little and shook my head.He started to flounder,"Not that dying your hair pink means your crazy! I mean, its a risk,but--I mean, not that it's bad at all! It's just differe--"
"Ashton,"I cut him off,placing a hand up on his shoulder,"calm yourself.It's alright.I know it's not totally normal."
He sighed in relief when Don turned the corner holding up the dark blue CD case,"Here ya go!Which one's it for?" I raised my hand and he gave it to me with a little bow.
"Thanks,Donny. You're the best." He gave a wave of his hand and waddled his way back to the counter.
"And,uh,"Ashton kept on,"speaking of Michael,we're kinda in a band together."
"Oh yeah?Garage band?"
"Kinda,yeah."He chuckled a little down to me,"But we're kinda good.So,if you want...sometime.."
"I could stop buy and give you boys a listen?"Finishing his sentence for him.He let out a breath with a smile and a nod."That's very 80s movie of you.Nice of you to ask, though, and maybe I will. This isn't a date though, because that line was way to cliche."
"Oh,no!"He said quickly, holding up his hands,"No,you just seem like you'd be into our sound."
I nodded,"Alright,sounds good."I held my hand out to him,"Phone."
He fumbled in his pockets for a minute before holding it out to me.I took it,entered my number and name into his contacts, and handed it back to him. I then handed him my phone and let him put his name into mine as well.
"Juliet Downheart."He read back to me,"Nice name.Like something out of a story book."
I laughed and tapped him on the shoulder with the CD case,"And you,Ashton?"
"Ashton Irwin."
"Oooh,sounds like a rock star.
"Well,I try."
I grinned, stuffing my hands into my jacket pockets,"Alright,Ashton Irwin, text me with a time and place and maybe I'll be there."I walked past him, heading up to the counter with my CD.
This was odd to me; giving a strange boy my number in a music shop.Sounded like some kind of story you would here from an 80-year-old woman recanting how she met her lover...but I didn't think that was where this was going.I saw this going in a complete other direction.Friendship maybe,or groupie.By the looks of him, their sound had to be decent...who knew.
